13 Things That Aren't A Given For Everyone In College

Stop assuming that you know everything about every college experience.

All over Facebook and just about every other kind of social media there are articles and lists saying 'Things Every College Student Goes Through' or 'Experiences You Must Have In College' and other things of that nature. But what they can't seem to fathom is that there are many different kinds of college experiences. So stop assuming about other people!

1. Not everybody likes to party

Stop assuming that every college student goes to parties every weekend. Parties aren’t for everyone; some like to stay in and watch a movie with friends or read a book. There are so many other things to do on a college campus besides party.

2. Speaking of partying, not everyone drinks

I know that seems like a shocker but you don’t have to drink to have fun. Some people don’t want to get drunk, plus who wants to be hungover?

3. Beer Pong

Going along with drinking and partying, this is just a game that involves both. There are other games to play.

4. Greek Life

Although many people do choose to rush into Greek Life, not everyone gets involved. And that isn't a mark against or for their character. Some people just don't prefer that kind of experience.

5. Dry Erase Boards

A lot of people keep these on their doors so peple can write on them. Now this one is a lot different than the previous mentioned, but not everyone keeps this kind of thing on their door. It mainly applies to dorm and on campus living, but whatever.

6. Living in a dorm or on campus

Not everyone does this, people live at home or off campus their first year and the rest of their college experience. And this doesn't lessen their experience.

7. Dropping Classes

Some people know exactly what they're doing and won't give up when they're failing or falling behind in a class. And honestly speaking, props to you if you haven't done this.

8. Skipping classes

This is something that a lot of people do, but there are those who don't. And those people probably have better grades.

9. Change majors

There are people out there that know what they want to do from the second they enter college. And I'm still amazed by those people.

10. Meal plans

This is something that goes along with living in the dorms or on campus, but for those that don't have it...you aren't missing too much.

11. Staying up late to finish a paper

There are those that don't stay up late to finish a paper because... GASP... they finished it before the night before.

12. All nighters

This is something that some people avoid with every fiber of their being, because of a few reasons; one, they get their done ahead of time, and two, they LOVE sleep!

13. Even scantron exams

Now this one may surprise you, but depending on the major and classes someone is taking, they may not have any exams; instead, they might just have papers, projects, and speeches, etc. You get the picture.

I’m not saying that if you do everything that is listed above that you are a horrible person. What I’m saying is that people need to stop assuming that everyone’s college experience is the same. I’m tired of looking at the ’20 things everyone experiences in college’ and relating to only 3. So it’s perfectly fine* if you partake in the above, just remember that it isn’t the only way to go through college and life.

*If you choose to drink underage, be aware, be safe, and make sure you have someone to take care of you.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
