Not All Heroes Wear Capes: The 5 Ordinary Americans Who Became Superstars During the 2016 Election
The Atlantic

The 2016 Presidential Election is over, and Donald Trump will be our next president. From a cursory scroll through my social media feeds this morning, that news has caused a variety of reactions. I have seen everything from joy to sadness to outright panic. With few exceptions the tone was overwhelmingly negative though.

In a time like this sometimes we need a reason to smile. We need a reason to remember that there are still good people, or at least people worth laughing at. This election has been full of those people, and many of them are ordinary Americans just like us. These people stole the spotlight, and in some cases the entire show, and made this election cycle a little more bearable.

So without further ado I present to you the group of ordinary Americans who reached superstardom during this election. Enjoy!

1. The Khans

At the Democratic National Convention Khazir Khan and his wife, a gold star family, stole the hearts and minds of America with his touching story and moving words. His status as a superstar was further cemented when Trump attacked Khan and his wife. Since then the Khazir has gone on to speak at multiple Clinton and events and star in her campaign ads.

2. Kenneth Bone

Fact: everything's better in a sweater. Kenneth Bone is no exception. Bone was the highlight of the town hall debate and while the pundits debated whether Clinton or Trump had been victorious, the internet knew the truth. He then went on a whirlwind tour of TV channels, radio stations, and other public appearances. Of course things went south for him after his history of unsavory Reddit comments went public, but hey he still got his fifteen minutes.

3. The USA Freedom Kids

The Freedom kids are a group of three girls who performed a dance routine at a January Trump rally. The video of the girl's performance went viral just as quickly as the relationship between the girl's manager and the Trump campaign soured. After a series of supposed transgressions on the part of the Trump campaign, the girl's manager (who is also the father of one of the girls) is now suing the Trump campaign. Way to keep those girls relevant dad!

4. Rachel Casey

While her name may not be familiar, the video of her getting egged might be. Casey, a bodybuilder and physical therapist, walked into a group of anti-Trump protestors wearing a Trump jersey and apparently walked out with literal egg on her face. While she admits to egging the protestors on (see what I did there), Casey says she was just defending herself after the protestors started it. She was later asked to join Trump on stage at his rallies, and it appears she declined that invitation.

5. Zdenek Gazda

Now he is probably the least individually famous person on this list, but his video might be the most influential. Gazda and a family member were the original sources of the video of Clinton passing out after a visit to the World Trade Center Monument. Gazda posted the video to his personal Twitter account where it spread like wildfire and was picked up by major media outlets. The incident happened during Clinton's bout with pneumonia, and led to weeks of rampant speculation about the state of her health.

Now these people achieved their fame for different reasons, and hung on to it for different amounts of time. However, as different as their situations are they all helped to make the 2016 election season just a little more bearable.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
