Not All Heroes Wear Capes

They wear something even better.

Update To Jobs

Children grew up idolizing superheroes like Superman or Batman. The ones with fancy powers (or in Batman's case, a lot of money). The ones in comic books, television series, or movie franchises (I see you Marvel).

Children don't realize that these figures are not real. They enjoy the idea of who they are and what they offer, but that's all it is. It's fun for them. They don't understand that there are real heroes in every day life that do more saving and do more for this planet than comic heroes could ever do.

A teacher is the one who educates the youth of today. They are put in charge and given that responsibility to help children, young adults, people of all ages... to earn the education and be taught right.

A doctor is the one who saves lives. They go to school for a countless number of years, go through vigorous training, shadowing, fellowships, etc. just to save a life at the end of the day. They are the ones who endure all this education in order to protect people from sickness, injuries, life-threatening situations, and so much more. Even if it's something minor, they are the ones to tell you it's only minor and do not worry about anything. Doctors dedicate their lives to protecting other lives.

A firefighter also saves lives in the form of protecting people from fires. They are the ones to jump into a burning building, risk their lives, to save another.

A police officer risks their life each day to protect the common good. They catch speeders and drunk drivers on the road to prevent accidents. They are in the line of fire at times. They catch criminals. They protect and serve. They do every thing they can to protect every woman, man, and child.

A veterinarian protects the lives of animals. Our pets. Our companions. We can go to them with any problem our furry friend has and know they will be in good hands. They have also endured the education and training to be able to save lives of animals.

No matter who, no matter which branch, a military individual risks their lives when they are stationed in another country. Fighting for our country. They left their families and homes for us to feel safe in ours.

A mother and a father are some of the best heroes we will experience each day. They are the ones to raise us. To nurture us. To care for us, even when no one else will. They are the ones who were there from day one and will continue to be there no matter what.

There are true heroes in this world that we can all appreciate and idolize. They are the ones we inspire to be. To one day become them so we can continue the cycle of saving and inspiring others. Superman and Batman have nothing on our real life heroes.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
