Contrary to popular belief, not every person that is a part of Greek Life comes from a wealthy lifestyle.
That stereotype is something that really makes me irritated.
From how Greek Life is portrayed in movies and southern schools, a lot of people think that if you're in a sorority or fraternity that you get money handed to you by your parents to pay all of your expenses. If you're a part of Greek Life and your parents do pay for everything for you, then you are extremely lucky.
There are some people who don't have that luxury and have to try to pay for everything on your own.
For me, trying to find the funds to pay for school, living expenses, and sorority dues is a hard at times, but it ends up being worth it. Working a minimum wage job between classes and social life takes some time away from doing some sorority stuff, but it makes it better to be constantly busy. I joined a sorority because I wanted to make friendships that will last and be involved on campus, not to pay for friends.
If that's all it was, I wouldn't be in one because I don't have the funds for that.
Being a part of an organization like Greek life has helped me expand myself in many ways, like being more confident in myself. I don't mind paying the dues to be in the sorority if it's helping me become a better woman. There are a ton of girls that are in the same situation as I am and love being a part of a sorority no matter the cost.
Don't think that sororities are only rich girls.
If you're thinking about joining a sorority, don't let the cost of it be an issue. It's something that can change your life for the better.
