Size:
South: Southern schools usually have a larger campus Greek populations, compared to their northern counterparts. For southern schools, this translates into more sororities on campus or larger total chapter sizes--sometimes even both. You're more likely to find the chapters with two hundred or three hundred sisters (or more) down South.
North: As the North has a more even combination of smaller liberal arts schools, medium-sized universities, and larger state schools, there is more variation in chapter size. I've found most northern school chapter sizes to range from 50-200 women.
Chapter House:
South: You know those grand, white washed, plantation-style houses with wrap around front porches and balconies? You'll only find this type of chapter house at Southern schools with large college campuses.
North: Chapter houses at northern campuses are often colonial brick houses--grand in a different sense. Of course, both variations in chapter house size and style exist in the North and the South, but the colonial-type houses are typically characteristic of the North and the plantation-type houses are found in the South.
Clothing Trends:
South: Color-wise, sorority women clothing trends correspond with the general regional clothing trends. Pastels and floral prints are commonly clad on Southern sorority women, while graphic prints and a neutral palate are common among Northern sorority women.
North: While Lilly Pulitzer takes over the the South, Brandy Melville rules in the North. Cold weather considerations considerably affect those of us going to school in the North--layers are attire necessities.
Crafting:
South: Glitter, mod podge, ribbon, double-sided tape, and paint--these supplies are probably already in your crafting box/closet/room. Crafting is solace for many sorority women, artistic or not. I know that our chapter has a definite glitter fixation--are there plastic bins of just glitter in the basement? You betcha! One noticeable difference I've seen is painting coolers. This is such standard practice at Southern sorority chapters--painting (and repainting and repainting until the perfectionist inside is satisfied) coolers for date nights, formal, etc.
North: This is not practiced at my and some other Northern college campuses. I don't really understand why this is, but I am chalking it up to a lack of commitment to the time-sucking process that painting a cooler can be on the part of Northern sorority girls (read: ain't nobody got time for that).
Your chapter might be a bit different from my chapter, but at the end of the day, we're all still sorority women.
