If You're An NC State Student, CRU Is The Club You Need To Join
Samm Ellingson

At NC State, there are so many student organizations available but the one that has impacted me the most is CRU. CRU is a campus ministry that was founded in 1951 in California and has since spread to campuses across the nation and globe. CRU has an especially large presence on State's campus and while everyone might not know what it is, he or she is likely to have seen someone in a red CRU t-shirt.

CRU is, "a caring community passionate about connecting others to Jesus Christ" and the way we do that is through large group weekly meetings, small group Bible studies, retreats, and events. As soon as you get connected, you have access to other students from all majors, parts of campus, and ages.

I joined CRU reluctantly during freshman year, and it turned out to be the best decision of college. There are so many reasons I am thankful for CRU and how it has impacted my life, but I think these are the ones that best describe all CRU is and has to offer.

1. The authentic community

The number one thing everyone is looking for in college is somewhere to belong. CRU is an open invitation for each and everyone regardless of where you are in your spiritual journey. It provides a connection to others who are similar to you as well as different.

2. Growth

Giphy

CRU has grown me in every way I can think of: it has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible and has taught me new things about myself that I could not have learned on my own. College is an ideal time to learn who you want to be and CRU has shown me who God says I am and the new places I can go in the world and within myself.

3. Countless opportunities

Giphy

If there is something you want to do, there's a way you can do it through CRU. Planning events, attending fun activities, intramural sports, volunteering, spring break trips, summer internships, and even babysitting can all be done through CRU. CRU has given me so many opportunities. I truly cannot imagine what my college career would have looked like without it. I was able to go to Clearwater Beach, Florida and Fort Collins, Colorado with CRU for two of my summers. I spent spring break of freshman year in Destin, Florida and spring break of sophomore year in New York City also with CRU. I have even gotten connected to several families who I babysit for regularly. All because of CRU.

4. Mentorship

Giphy

CRU has small group Bible studies lead by upperclassmen who truly invest in your life. After freshman year, you have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with your leader or a CRU staff person who care for you. This is one of my favorite things about CRU and one that has been integral in my spiritual and emotional growth.

5. The FUN

Giphy

CRU is truly SO much fun! Game nights, wiffleball, Fall Retreat, Barn Party, Party at the Park, Skates and Shakes- the list could go on and on. CRU provides so many events that are cheap or free where students can just have fun. There's always something going on to provide a community on campus.

I am forever thankful for CRU and all it has brought to my life. I am taking advantage of every part of CRU for my last year of college and encourage any college student at NC State or anywhere else to join CRU and experience it with me!

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
