Not Your Normal Day At The Beach

How a recent encounter at the beach, changed my outlook on life.

Earlier in the week, I took a visit to the beach with a few close friends to celebrate the end of summer semester. Six weeks ago, we all came together to further our education while also enjoying the college life. The semester flew by and we couldn’t believe that the final week was coming upon us. We decided to head over to the calm waters of the St. Petersburg to enjoy the day.

We woke up early in the morning to head over to the beach as the drive there is slightly over an hour. Before heading over, we ate breakfast at one of the best local restaurants, First Watch. The food is always fresh, delicious and the portions are more than enough. Following breakfast we got on the road and started our adventure at the beach.

Once we arrived to the beach, we ran over to the shore. The sand was full of small pieces of shells which at first was uncomfortable but after a while was pleasant. I remember it was early in the morning and there was only a few people there which was beneficial to us as we could run without being interrupted. I had been alternating between playing football in a large group and laying on my back while the sun’s rays hit my back. Well that’s how it was for only about 30 more minutes.

I remember placing my head down on a towel for about five minutes until I begin to hear a loud roar approaching. That roar was followed by bright streaks in the sky. Before I knew it, there was a large storm moving in right above us. We had only been at the beach for three hours and planned on staying all day but we knew if the storm hit we’d have to leave. So what should we do?

Like all smart college students, I figured it was a great time to go for a run on the beach. My friend and I literally ran for about a mile and a half up the shore. The problem with this was the time. Since the storm was already approaching one we began running, the weather had turned while running. We had to stop mid-way and run all the way back to gather our belongings. We rushed back and grabbed everything in a frantic and headed towards the car. We waited a while and realized the weather wasn’t going to clear up so we drove back home.

Well that’s at least where I wanted the day to end but that’s not what happened. I thought I had grabbed all my belongings but this was far from the truth. Once we arrived home, I realized I could not find my wallet. I was in a state of panic. I had all my important documents in that wallet which caused me to freak out.

While unable to control myself, I received a message on Facebook. The message was from a person I had never met, had no mutual friends but I decided to read it. The message shockingly enough was from a guy saying he had found my wallet on the beach and wanted to return it. At first I thought this was one of my friends tricks on me but later I came to realize this was actually real. The person offered to meet up or mail me the wallet. I was surprised because I figured I would never see the wallet again.

Yesterday, I got the chance to check my mail and received the wallet in the mail. I opened it up and everything was there as if it had never been touched. This was such a special moment as it helped me understand that there are still people in this world with good hearts. When watching the news, it makes me depressed and think the world is such a bad place but something as simple as returning a wallet has gave me a new perspective. I’m more positive towards my outlook on life as I know that everyone is not out to get you. There are many great people in this world that will do their best to help our and that’s exactly was this was. A good person, with a kind heart that helped give me a new outlook on life. All over a wallet.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
