Silence Is Not The Answer

Standing in solidarity with the Black Community

Silence Is Not The Answer

I have to admit that I do not know where to begin and I sure do not know where it will end. But I do know that the pain I feel is nothing compared to the pain my black brothers and sisters are feeling, have felt, and will always keep feeling until we and I mean everyone decides to stand in unity with the black community.

In this past week Alton Sterling and Philando Castille were killed by police officers. In Dallas, Texas officers were also killed. The media is talking about both situations yet, the only difference is that the guy that killed these police officers will be serving justice while the officers that killed Alton Sterling and Philando Castile are not serving justice. This is unfair and this is why so many people are upset, mad, and furious.

On social media people have already taken a stand. You have the ones, like me saying, repeating, and constantly posting things that say Black Lives Matter. Then you have a group of people saying All Lives Matter. Lastly, you have ones that are not posting anything but let me tell you, if you are one of those people well you have already taken a stand. And that stand is the stand of the oppressors. By not speaking up you have chosen to ignore what is going on because it does not concern you. That is being privileged. You do not have to worry about being killed because of the color of your skin. You do not have to worry about any of your family members or friends being killed because of their skin color. You get to live at peace how beautiful is that. Unfortunately, not everyone gets to live like that.

I have seen the hashtags Black Lives Matter and ALL Lives Matter. But the reality is that clearly ALL Lives do not matter if Black people are being killed . If all lives matter then there would not be hashtags such as Black Lives Matter. If All Lives matter then why is it that my black brothers and sisters live everyday in fear. They do not and are not getting to enjoy life to the fullest like me or any other person that is not black. Instead, they have to fear for their life and pray that they do not get killed or that any of their family members do not get killed, or their friends. If All Lives Matter like people say they do, then why are people being killed in the first place?

You cannot say All Lives Matter when that is not true. If everyone's Lives mattered then we would not have people protesting against police brutality. If All Lives Mattered then we would not have had to mourn the deaths of the LGBTQ+ community (the Orlando Shooting). The point is that if All Lives Matter like people say they do then know one should be killed in the first place. All lives cannot matter until Black lives matter.

Lastly, to the Black Community, I am sorry that it has had to come to this extreme in where several people of color and whites are finally standing in solidarity with you. I am so sorry that history has had to repeat itself. I am also sorry ,that for so long Brown and Black people have been fighting against each other when we should be joining forces.

Yet, I am here to remind you that you will no longer stand alone. I and other woke people will be standing by your side just lead the way and we will follow.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
