Austin, Texas is considered to be the live music capital of the world. It’s home to Austin City Limits Music Festival and has numerous concert venues throughout the city, hence the live music capital title. Austin also has this rad band called Nominee, who have an EP coming out on Jan. 26th called Drag Me Out. The EP deals with the struggles and issues that people have when dealing with mental illness. Nominee features past members of I Call Fives as well as former Thieves. I recently had the opportunity to check out the album and review it and I was not disappointed.
The EP is comprised of 7 rad songs that are all catchy and have really strong lyrics. After listening to the EP the aspects that stuck with me were the lyrics and just the overall sound of the band. The first song on the EP is called is called “Weathered”. It starts the album out and you think that it’s going to be a slow song. But that changes and the song becomes faster and the vocals pick up strength. It’s a pretty intense song lyrically, it talks about being settled but still not being satisfied with what you have. That’s not a good feeling to have but I’m sure a lot of people have experienced it and this song gives that feeling life.
My favorite song on this album was tied between the lead single Stay and Drag Me Out. These songs stuck with me the most throughout the time I listened to the EP. Stay was just a really catchy song, it reminded me of a song by State Champs that get’s stuck in my head every time I hear it. I really liked how strong the guitars were in the song and I like the effort that the vocalist put into the vocals. He sounded like he was really passionate about what he was singing about and that’s how it should be when you write/sing a song.
Drag Me Out was also really catchy but I liked it because it had really good instrumentals and lyrics. It had lots of cool drum parts at the beginning of the song and the guitar on top just worked out so well. Around the 2 minute 30 second mark, there’s a section where it’s just the singer and guitar and then all the instruments come in. I can just imagine seeing this band live and hearing people sing that part so loud. The lyrics to me sound like there's a bad person in your life and you know their no good and you love them but you need them out of your life. I know people who have gone through situations like that and I think this song would help them out a lot.
Overall, I really loved this EP and if Nominee ever comes to SoCal I really would like to see them.
