I love sushi more than a lot of things. I've always liked the mystique and creativity of it. I have owned sushi erasers and a plush Nigiri pillow with a face. I dressed up in a homemade sushi costume at a party in college and brought it back for a Halloween event this year (an over sized white t-shirt decorated with scraps of other shirts, Mardi Gras beads, glitter, and restaurant chop sticks- it's a pretty good replica of a tuna roll if I do say so myself). My favorite episode of Nickelodeon's Doug from the 90's was the episode where Doug and Skeeter go and get sushi with Skeeter's grandmother. I took particular joy in leading a summer camp activity where campers got to make their own sushi rolls out of Rice Krispies Treats and candy. So, needless to say, it's hard not to choose a sushi restaurant when I go out to dinner. Today, I'm sharing some of my favorite places in New Orleans to have my favorite kind of food.
Rock-N-Sake
This place is legitimately like its own nightclub with loud music and dim mood lighting. It's always a fun experience there, but there is also almost always a wait. However, you can make the wait less painful with a pretty cocktail from their glamorous bar. They really go all out on their sushi presentation, too. The Dragon Roll is in the shape of an actual dragon, complete with adorable face. The Upside Down roll is served sizzling like a fajita.
Mikimoto
If you're lucky enough to live in a territory where Mikimoto delivers, I implore you to take advantage of it. You can also dine in, of course, and everything there is just good. This is actually my nanny child's all-time favorite restaurant. I like the Mango Roll, and they also do some good rice-free varieties with cucumber on the outside.
Sushi Brothers
My friends and I used to go here all the time in college. It's on St. Charles so you can streetcar conveniently, and everything is super fresh. My favorite thing here is the red miso soup.
Sake Cafe
This is where my boyfriend and I went on our first date. They are a little on the pricier side (but first date, aww). They have this one sushi roll that is served literally in flames, a good happy hour, and a nice variety of items on their menu.
Ninja
Ninja is so convenient to the university area of New Orleans and makes me miss my college apartment a lot. I have a lot of good Ninja memories and still try to go as much as I can. Their Spicy California Roll is a much enhanced version of the regular thing.
There are many more delicious sushi options around the city, but these are some good ones to check out when starting a New Orleans sushi adventure. Much sushi love to all.
