I'm About To Experience Not Having A Phone For A Week

You heard it first here folks, I have no other option then to go cold turkey.

I'm About To Experience Not Having A Phone For A Week

I was a proud owner of a three year old iPhone 5c. Unfortunately, last week my iPhone started shutting off at 95% battery level. I can barley complain about this situation though. My dinosaur of a phone has survived being dropped in the toilet (twice), being dropped down stairs, thrown across the floor, etc., so it's only understandable that the phone's time has come.

For the past week I've been surviving by walking around with my charger in hand plugging my phone in where ever I go (even the line at Starbucks.) Instead of buying a new phone and dropping at least $200, I decided to buy a battery and try to fix it on my own. Low and behold this was an epic fail.

For the next seven days while I wait for my new iPhone to come in the mail, I will be going throughout the week without a phone. Surprisingly I'm not that worked up over it, I actually kind of like the idea of being off the grid for a little bit. College life can be stressful and my phone is constantly buzzing. Maybe this is just what I needed, a "phone detox."

Granted my Mac still works, so I'm not completely technology-less, but I'm a lot less likely to check social media when I have a few spare minutes if that means taking out my laptop.

I feel like so much of us are consumed with spending every waking moment on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook that we can't even fathom the idea of putting our technology down for a second to have a conversation or just enjoying our surroundings.

Maybe I have too much faith in myself, maybe I'm speaking too soon. I honestly do not know how I'm going to fair this week. I'm trying to stay positive by taking this opportunity to unplug and learn something from this experience and maybe even about myself.

I'm hoping that after this week, once I have a phone again, I will be less likely to hide behind it the second I'm not occupied with something and that I may not find the need to check it 20 million times a day.

How much time do you waste on your phone? How many experiences do you miss out on because you're too engaged in what's happening on your screen to look up? I'm not asking you to go cold turkey like myself, but hopefully what I'm about to go though might make you question your phone habits.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
