You may be familiar with your As and Bs and Cs, but are you educated or just literate? The importance of education cannot be stated enough. It is a self-enlightening process. It is crucial to the overall development of an individual and the society at large. The first time a child is introduced into this field is through school--the grounding years of one's teaching, and a process of knowledge gain. It provides an understanding of the world around us and changes it into something better. People debate over the subject of whether instruction is the only aspect that gives comprehension, but on the morning of Wednesday, February 10, 2016- it is clear young talent was recognized and nurtured.
15-year-old Gavin Costello, a freshman studying in the welding program, and eighteen-year-old Angelo Mel-tos happened to notice their school bus driver moving erratically and taking alternate routes, none of which were following the direct path to the Somerset County Vocational and Technical School, located on North Bridge in Bridgewater. After missing the North Bridge Street exit, and the driver furthermore proceeding to respond with silence when alerted of the mistake, these two students amongst 28 others decided to take action. Costello immediately jumped up front and starting giving directions in seek of something more promising than where the bus was headed. Again with no reply and, even worse, the man was noted for "looking down and looking around. He couldn't talk at all" as said by Costello in a report to the police which prompted his idea to get this man off the wheel.
Mel-tos called 911 to get assistance for the driver, who was not identified by the police, but this left the remaining students on the bus in a panic. When the driver continued to force in this fashion on Route 22 West, Costello approached him and it was due to his wisdom and ability to interpret things that he was able to convince him to apply the brakes. After putting the bus in park and applying the emergency brake, Mel-tos was competent to turn off the engine. It is not just about lessons in textbooks. It is about the lessons of life.
Once the police and medical personnel arrived the bus driver was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital Somerset in Somerville for testing and therapy. The final results concluding with the driver suffering an undisclosed illness; conversely, all students unharmed thanks to the bravery of two adolescent boys. It is nothing short of the question in what if the cure for cancer is trapped inside the mind of someone who cannot afford an education? It is instrumental in the development of our values and virtues. Education cultivates us into mature individuals; individuals capable of planning for the future, and taking the right decisions in life and in this case saving lives. It gives us an insight into living, and teaches us to learn from experience. It is necessary in my book to provide learning for all: no child left behind for they have the potential to go to places one never expected.
