One of the best parts about playing "Super Smash Bros for the Wii U" is that not only can you choose which character you want to represent but rather you also get to choose which game in the Nintendo Universe you want to represent. So I've already talked a lot about how much I love this game but I want to talk about Nintendo gaming and exactly where I think there can be areas that could be improved. I saw a glimpse of how the competitive Smash scene treated people from Nintendo, and how Nintendo treats the Smash community.
Apparently, Hungrybox, one of the best "Super Smash Bros Melee" players in the world, openly shows his distaste for why he thinks Nintendo could do better. Watching this made me feel hopeful for what can happen if everyone in the community is able to work together and decide as a whole what is best for competitive Nintendo games. The people that already run tournaments for Smash are all on deck to help Nintendo in this endeavor, but it's a shame how they are not biting.
So there is a game already out for Nintendo called "Splatoon" and there is another one coming out called "Arms" which will be two flagship games Nintendo will put its chips on for the future of Esports. I love and respect the exciting new direction that Nintendo is taking with games that are a bit more new but I think they are not giving enough credit where credit is due.
I can't just blame Nintendo for everything that is wrong with the smash community, the fact that there are so many different characters from different games licensed underneath one title, it could be very difficult to be able to figure out the legality of trademarks and other things of that sort. I mean there is Sega, Capcom and other companies that are lending their digital fighters into a game that Nintendo can profit off of, and that profit has to be negotiated somehow. What if no one uses Capcom characters? Will the money split based on merit in the game? These are all assumptions I have about the company, so I might be wrong about them.
I also have strong opinions about how the Esports Arena should be presented to the public. In a lot of ways Esports are like sports but because of the small turnouts that occur from tournaments, it is hard to create definitive quality entertainment purely based off of status in the game. What I mean by this is I wish there were a professional league and an amateur league that could be separate. With this distinction, the excitement with which audiences can tune into can be more directed.
Sponsors should also acquire exclusivity from players within tournaments so that money can be made from audience viewership rather than collecting the pot from tournament buy-ins. Now how is an Esport that has most of its audience not only watch but participate gain exclusively audience members? The answer isn't that easy because playing the game generates more of the excitement of what is happening in the game than anything else. Knowing every character's arsenal is one way of looking at it, but I think of a character as a team, and the different moves they use as each player on the team to help in the process. With changing match-ups and opponents, players decide on which moves should never be used, sometimes be used, or always be used.
Nintendo has had trouble. With how the Wii U did, (I blame the marketing, they should have named it something completely different), Nintendo has had to scramble for mobile games, and a newer system (Nintendo Switch) sooner than expected. I never thought Nintendo would go mobile because they are like Apple, they make their stuff to work with their own stuff. Never would I have thought I would be able to play a Mario game on my phone licensed by Nintendo. Nintendo needs to continue going out of their comfort zone and can hopefully start to compete with Sony and Microsoft.
