Nine Things Theatre Majors Hate Hearing As Told By The Office
Archbold Community Theatre

1. "I hope you plan on double majoring."

A degree in theatre is practical. I want a degree in theatre because I want to DO theatre. I do not WANT to be a lawyer, or a doctor, or a flip-floppin scientific researcher. I want to have a job in theatre.

2. "So...is everyone, like, gay at your school?"

I don't know??? Ask them???

3. "Wow, you're going to a really expensive school. How are you going to pay off all of that debt with a degree in theatre?"

Probably the same way everyone else is going to pay off their debt. Why would it be any different than someone majoring in the sciences or business?

4. "You probably aren't as busy as someone majoring in Pre-Med."

This is an actual joke, right? You're joking? Between three hour classes every day of the week, rehearsals with scene partners, rehearsals for shows, auditions, work, voice lessons, dance classes, homework for theatre classes, and homework for gen ed classes, I pretty much have about twenty hours to myself per week, not including sleep. So no, I'm not less busy than anyone else.

5. "You should really think about the consequences of majoring in theatre. Are you prepared to wait tables for the rest of your life?"

Yes, I'm prepared to wait tables. I'm also prepared to work in my field because of my training, but thank you for your concern.

6. "How do you feel now that your show ended?"

Mentally, emotionally, and physically drained. In fact, I'd rather be sleeping right now, but I have to go strike the set while crying with the rest of my cast.

7. "Wow, you must have no homework."

I have so much homework, and all of my projects are group projects. I have to meet with my scene partner four times a week to rehearse our scene. I have to write paper after paper analyzing the same character. I have to practice for voice lessons, and I have to memorize my scene, and all of my audition pieces. Did I mention that I'm required to audition for every show? Yeah, I'm pretty busy with homework.

8. "Did you know (insert super famous actor here) didn't major in theatre? Look at how famous he or she is! A degree isn't necessary for you. You should major in the sciences."

Hi! I'm still going to major in theatre! I would like to improve as much as possible before throwing myself into the world of auditions, agents, and casting directors. Also, college is a great way for me to make connections. So, yep, I'm going to stick with a degree in theatre. Thanks.

9. "You were never a lead in high school, what makes you think you can be successful?"

Sorry I didn't peak in high school. I'm going to school because I'm not a perfect performer. If I was, I would be famous already, but thank you again for your concerns.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
