Ahh, summer. Endless hours to get a tan and get things done, right? Well, Summer 2016 is winding to a close and you may be realizing that you’ve accomplished…nothing. Here are nine things that you could have done with your summer.

1. Made Some $$

Well all know what it's like to be broke. But summer is a very convenient time to have a job and make some cash that will inevitably be spent at Urban Outfitters and on Taco Bell.

2. Gotten Ahead in School

Do you feel perpetually behind in school? Whether it be taking a summer course, buying a planner, or looking over the syllabi for fall classes, future you will be thankful for the prep.

3. Had a Summer Fling

Perhaps the cute fro-yo cashier? Or maybe the impossibly tan lifeguard? There’s nothing more recklessly thrilling than letting yourself and your emotions get caught up in the heat of a summer fling. Go find yourself a steamily fleeting relationship, just remember not to let it last into September.

4. Gotten in Shape

Between eating cheeseburgers and walking around the mall for cardio, you could have found the time to do some real exercise. But it's never too late to add some squats into your daily routine, just don't forget to treat yourself to an ice cream cone every now and then.

5. Watched the Sunrise

There's something breathtaking about seeing the sun peep over the horizon and knowing that a whole day lies ahead of you. Seeing it rise from an interesting spot, like the beach or a mountaintop makes it an adventure. Grab a friend and some coffee and start your day off right.

6. Gone on Vacation/Taken a Road Trip

The best part of summer is that you're on VACATION. Whether you jet set to a foreign locale or make a quick road trip with friends to the coast, vacations always prove to be unforgettable.

7. Read a Book

When you can’t escape the trap of your hometown, the easiest way to teleport to another world is through a book. Carry your novel outside to a park bench or lay on a beach towel to soak up the sun, while you let yourself get lost in the story.

8. De-Cluttered Your Life

One of the fastest ways to give yourself a fresh start is by getting rid of some of the junk in your life. Throw away old papers and donate clothes you never wear anymore. Delete emails and the pictures that are clogging your camera roll. Literally, just dump it all.

9. Met Up With High School Friends

Since a lot of the old gang are probably local for the summer, get together and reminisce, because admit it, you miss those guys! Trade college horror stories and be mutually thrilled high school is behind you all forever.

At the end of the day, or season, having a good summer comes down to enjoying yourself! There's still time to try something fun and doing whatever makes you happy is how you should spend your time. Summer isn’t defined by how much you’ve “done”. It’s about who has the best tan.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead.
