9 Reasons Why You Should Write for The Odyssey

If you would've asked me while I was in high school if I would have imagined to ever be a writer for the Odyssey, my answer would probably have been no. Through the Odyssey, I've had the opportunity to do many more amazing things. The odyssey is always looking for new writers, and I know some people need an extra push to get them to submit an application. Here are 9 reasons why you should join me in proudly being a writer for the Odyssey.

1. Let your voice be heard

The Odyssey is a place where people are able to write about anything they want. No opinion is the wrong one. As a writer, you are able to choose your writing topic every week, with a team that is there to support you.

2. Improve your writing skills

Being a writer for the Odyssey gives you chance to share your writing and get feedback from not only your family and friends but strangers and your community of fellow writers and EIC as well. You what is better than having your family and friends tell you how great of a writer you are? Hearing the same thing from complete strangers who were able to read your writing through the Odyssey.

3. Make new friends

The Odyssey is similar to a club on campus, in the sense that it is a place where you can make new friends while also getting more involved on campus. The people who you meet through the Odyssey will be the ones helping decide what you want to write as well as people you will see around campus. Being a writer can give you the small talk that you need to start a new friendship.

4. Gain experience

Being a writer for the Odyssey helps you to gain experience. You get in the habit of thinking of new things to write every week (and if you can’t, your fellow writers and EIC are there to help you). Writing for the Odyssey is something you can add to your resume.

5. Learn new things

After becoming a member of the Odyssey community, you tend to get curious about things other writers across the country are writing about. After a while, you find yourself reading articles, learning new things and overall expanding your mind.

6. Network

The Odyssey is not only a place to meet new friends, but to network as well. When you meet people, who enjoy writing as much as you do, you’re building a bridge for the future purposes. You never know who might be interviewing you for a job someday.

7. Become more responsible

With the Odyssey, you are expected to write at least one article a week. The odyssey keeps you productive while also helps you to become more responsible and able to write article(s) full of flavor some even at the last minute if your EIC needs an extra article.

8. Be inspired

Many people never imagined themselves writing for the Odyssey but it opens the doors for you to shoot for your dreams in the future. If you can be a quality writer for the Odyssey, you can do anything. It gives you the attitude you need to aim for the unimaginable.

9. Try new things

Some of history’s greatest writers never imagined they would be one. The Odyssey provides an opportunity for you to see if you want to be a writer, or to maybe give you the extra push you have been looking for you to double major in English.

If you would like to apply to an Odyssey community near you, you can do so here.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
