Nine Best Road Trip Cities in the Southeast

For all my people who like to travel, this one's for you. I've compiled my favorite cities in the Southeast to visit, along with a few helpful tips (pay close attention to the Charleston one!) The best part about taking a road trip is all of the dramatic, life-threatening, hilarious things that happen (or maybe that's just my road tripping experience!)

1. Nashville, Tennessee

"Music City" AKA the best big city that feels like a small town. Spend your day walking around the birthplace of country music (the best kind of music.) Also, don't forget to hit up the real crown jewel: the OpryMills Mall.

Tip: if you want a picture beside this cool wall mural, DO NOT park at the jewelry store across the street. The owner will OPEN your car door while you're taking your picture, forcing you to end your photo shoot early. Then, he will proceed to call you an "idiot" (I'm sorry, sir, I really am.)

2. Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte is nicknamed the "Queen City" so clearly I had to check it out. It's actually one of the coolest places I've been and has a ton of stuff to do. Be sure to check out Romare Bearden Park (prime place for good Instagram shots) and Bank of America Stadium (where the Carolina Panthers play!)

Tip: if you need gas while in Charlotte, DO NOT go to any gas station downtown. Even if you're two miles to empty and you'll have to push the car if you run out of gas, push the car. (And this is coming from someone who thinks all physical activity ever should be banned...)

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

I'm not even really sure why this one's on the list because I didn't have a super pleasant experience here....I don't even have a picture to show for my three days in NOLA, if that tells you anything. However, it does have cool things to do & someday I might give it another chance.

Tip: I don't know if this really counts, but do NOT take a charter bus. Because you know what will happen? The bus will get into an accident right before you're supposed to leave to go home & a six hour drive becomes double that. Also, that's not even the worst part. The accident caused my Arby's to spill. (I can feel your concern!)

4. Charleston, South Carolina

Also known as freshman Spring Break. Also known as the reason my friends don't let me book the hotel anymore. I'm going to start off by saying that Charleston is truly beautiful. Be sure to check out the Straw Market, Riverfront, and the house where "The Notebook"was filmed (see tip below.)

Tip: Do NOT, under any circumstances, stay at the LaQuinta Inn and Suites in North Charleston. I thought it wouldn't be that bad. I was wrong. We ended up having to tell the front desk we had a "family" emergency and we left that hotel. Then we ended up hotel-less on the streets of Charleston at two in the morning. Learn from my mistakes, people.

Second Tip: A cool thing about Charleston is that about ten minutes outside of town is the house where "The Notebook" was filmed. Unbeknownst to us, the house is private property and you're not allowed to see it. However, Noah and Allie deserve better and that's why we hopped a fence to get to it. And it was great. And if you're wondering why the house is so far away in all of the pictures, this is why. Take your picture and run, people.

5. Savannah, Georgia

I've been here twice, and it's been great both times. You MUST drive fifteen minutes to Tybee Island and eat at a place called "The Breakfast Club." The cheese grits are life changing.

Tip: if you want to go see the house from the Miley Cyrus movie, "The Last Song," make sure you're at the RIGHT house. There's nothing like getting home and realizing your two mile walk on the cold beach to the famous house is the wrong house. So, here's a picture with some random person's house that we thought was the famous house. *cue crying emoji*

6. Memphis, Tennessee

The birthplace of blues and soul. Obviously the home of Elvis Presley, Graceland, is a must see. I would recommended taking the VIP tour because it makes you feel super important and it's the one where you get to see his two planes.

Tip: Don't be alarmed when you go to Graceland and everyone is like, super Elvis-crazed and finds it personally offensive when you don't share in their frightening fandom.

7. Louisville, Kentucky

The best thing to see is here is obviously Churchill Downs (where the Kentucky Derby is hosted annually!) However, a little known fact about Louisville is that it was the home of the greatest man on Earth: Colonel Sanders. (Yes, that one!)

Tip: Go see the grave of Colonel Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Before you ask: yes, this is a real thing, and yes, I went (obviously). This picture is from my Snapchat, so pardon the poor quality.

8. Miami, Florida

Cue everyone saying that this isn't in the Southeast. Slow your roll, haters, because it counts in my book. (And that's the book that matters.) Miami is more than being the former residence of Lebron James. It also has really cultural things to do. Like going to the Kardashian's store, DASH.

Tip: Don't ask for sweet tea. They don't have it. And then people will totally judge you and give you that look like "clearly you're from the backwoods of Alabama." Ugh.

Here's a picture of me husband searching at the Miami Dolphins NFL game. (No luck.) Also, this is when I was a young, cute girl in high school, hence the appearance.

9. Fairhope, Alabama

I had to include my home state somewhere. This is the cutest little town in the world. This is also the place with the best ice cream in the world: Mr. Gene's Beans. Walk around all the little shops in their downtown district; they're all one-of-a-kind!

Tip: Do NOT trespass into someone's yard to get a good picture. Because you know what will happen? You'll drop your phone OVER their privacy fence and then have to get your friend to hold your legs while you risk your life saving your precious cellular device. Then you have bruises from the fence. Not cute. Not cute at all.

That was in said person's yard. So sorry.

That ends my list of cities. If there's one you think I should check out, let me know! Thrilled to announce that I'm now also taking applications for anyone who wants to road trip with me (don't all line up at once!)

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
