Nigeria is a very beautiful country with so many traditions and culture, and the country has so many diverse people. One thing that Nigerians take seriously is their food; it is a very important part of our culture. We have different types of dishes, but I will be mentioning a few of the main dishes that are most popular. I will be throwing in some quotes that are associated with some of these dishes, but beware these quotes are not always true.
Disclaimer: "Anyone that reads this without laughing, that person is looking for a job." – Lord Lugard (1914).
1. Jollof Rice.
"He who ask for stew on top of jollof rice has trust issues." – Alexander the III (1709).
Yes, you have probably heard that Nigerian Jollof is the best, and there is no doubt about that. If you want to be extra sure, just ask your Nigerian friend to prepare it for you or visit a Nigerian Restaurant and order a nice plate of Jollof rice and I promise you, your life will not be the same. Beware though, it might be spicy but nonetheless, it will be delicious. Ingredients include, but are not limited to, rice, tomato (paste) maggi, pepper, salt, oil and onion.
2. Suya.
My oh my! I will let the picture do the talking. Delicious cannot begin to describe how good this delicacy is. In order to enjoy this dish, it has to be served in a newspaper. Yeah weird, but that's the deal. This dish is made up of mainly meat and spice or peppers, onions and tomatoes.
3. Puff Puff.
This snack is available in almost every Nigerian party that you will attend. It is really light and fluffy. It is made of white flour, eggs and fried in a hot pan of groundnut oil.
4. Pepper Soup.
"Any man that uses his teeth to cut shaki from pepper-soup with his eyes wide open is not afraid of anything." – Martin Luther King Jr (1900).
Yes, it is exactly what the name is. It is a super spicy soup with tons of meat in it. Most people use intestines of a cow or goat. It sounds gross, but trust me, it tastes really good. Why would you trust a stranger right? How about you try it, again visit a Nigerian restaurant. Ingredients: some people just use plain fish or regular beef, goat meat or deer meat. Whatever meat you use, pepper soup always tastes good.
5. Chin Chin.
This is my favorite snack, and it is really easy to make. If you attend any Nigerian occasion, like weddings, birthday parties or Christmas celebrations, most of them will have Chin Chin as part of their menu. The ingredients include white flour, butter, sugar, nutmeg (not compulsory), milk and any other secret ingredient that you wish to use.
