Nick Jonas, pop singer and songwriter, has come a long way from his luscious head full of curls as a member of the brother trio famously known as the Jonas Brothers. This year, the 23-year-old is set to release his album “Last Year Was Complicated,” June 10.
In an interview with Out magazine, Jonas said the album is about his previous break-up. Jonas dated model Olivia Culpo for two years until the two broke up in 2015.
“It became very clear what it was going to be about, after the break-up,” Jonas said in the interview. “I just dove in headfirst and wrote about all of it. I think it was the most meaningful relationship I’ve ever been in.”
While he may have worn his innocence on his sleeve as a teen and sang about the Year 3000, he has certainly grown into a mature man through his music and shows just how human he really is.
On March 13, Jonas released the music video to "Chainsaw," the fourth song on the album. The sad post-breakup song highlights some of the emotion of the theme of the album and gives a deeper look into the broken heart of Jonas. Aside from Jonas' specific melodic tones, he displays a new level of maturity as he gives a glimpse of dealing with his own feelings.
Before the release of the song, Jonas tweeted the song is the most personal song he has written.
Not only is the music video visually strong as he sets fire to a house and throws china plates on the ground, but the lyrics of the song are equally impactful as he deals with the feelings of being alone.
He sings, “I'll just take a chainsaw to the sofa/ Where I held your body close for so long, so long. I’m going to break the fucking China/ 'Cause it’s just one more reminder you’re gone.” The song can be relatable for anyone who has ever felt alone after a break-up. I feel you, Nick. I feel you.
Fans can look forward to picking out their favorite tub of ice cream on the day of the release of the album which is likely to feature more post-breakup songs.
And to Nick Jonas, if you ever need a shoulder to cry on, I will always be here for you.
