Recently news broke in the mix martial arts world that the UFC is very close to booking a fight between #9 ranked welterweight Jorge Masvidal and the returning Nick Diaz in a fight that would be nothing short of exciting. Jorge Masvidal has been looking for a fight for some time now as he claims the rest of the division has been ducking him. That can definitely be the case as Jorge Masvidal is a dangerous fight for anyone to take. Nick Diaz was out of action for quite some time due to an absurd suspension that lasted over 4 years.
In 2015 Nick Diaz was hit with a 5-year suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission after he tested positive for marijuana after his bout at UFC 183. He would appeal the suspension and had it reduced to 18 months including a hefty fine. Unfortunately, Nick Diaz landed himself in hot water again when USADA issued Nick a one year sanction for not reporting his whereabouts on three different occasions which made it hard for him to be tested which also made it look very bad. The sanction would then be retroactive, and Nick Diaz was pretty much good with everything and has been cleared to fight for some time.
Jorge Masvidal as we all know has been looking for a fight for a while, but one just cannot seem to come together. Jorge "Gamebred" Masvidal has a mix martial arts record of 32 wins and 13 losses as he is constantly in the mix of the welterweight division. The last time we saw "Gamebred" Masvidal in the octagon was at the very historical UFC 217 when he took on #4 ranked welterweight Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson but lost the bout via unanimous decision.
Jorge Masvidal does have huge wins including a TKO victory over Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, Jake Ellenberger, and Ross Pearson. It makes everyone wonder what has been the hold up for "Gamebred." He has been very active outside the octagon as he has been competing in the Spanish version of American Ninja Warrior, so he is still in shape, to say the least. Honestly makes you wonder at this point what fights were offered before this Nick Diaz fight even became an idea.
The last time we saw Stockton, California's own Nick Diaz was when he took on former champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva in a controversial but interesting fight as he lost the bout decision but was turned into a no contest after they both test positive during drug testing. Nick Diaz also had a huge fight with George St-Pierre but unfortunately lost that bout by unanimous decision.
The former Strike Force Champion Nick Diaz is widely known as one of the greatest mix martial arts fighters of all time and is definitely one of the greatest fighters to ever step foot into the octagon so it will be exciting to see if Nick has been sharpening his tools while he was gone. It does leave us with the question with what is going on with his younger brother Nate Diaz?
