Finding Your Niche

With so many groups and activities to get involved with, you might as well try out some of them. Or a lot of them.

Extracurriculars are my favourite thing. Ever since elementary school I’ve sought ways to keep my time outside of class as full and enriching as possible. I’ve done plays, cross country, track, cheer, yoga, and various forms volunteer work. I love being busy, involved, and always having something new to do. You know, until it gets overwhelming and something has to change. But until that happens, it’s awesome! That being said, it’s no wonder that Plaza Fest is one of the best events on the University of Utah campus, in my humble opinion. All of the greatest clubs have student representatives sitting out at a table trying to get the attention of anyone that will give them the time of day in hopes that they will – quote unquote – join the cult. Cult of opportunity, that is! Ba-dum-tss. Lame puns aside, I really do adore braving the masses and navigating through throngs of humans searching for like-minded individuals in organizations that matter to them.

There’s nothing that I can yet compare to finding those people you truly feel like you belong with. Do you know how great it is to walk into a house full of amazing women knowing that they chose you as much as you chose them? No? Maybe you should consider going through rush at least for the experience. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stay with the lovely ladies of Kappa Kappa Gamma at the U due to the high cost of dues in social fraternity and sorority life. However, I still think fondly of my short time with them and have maintained a couple friendships with girls I met during recruitment. Things may not have worked out with there but I did find a spectacular community last year made up of the coolest athletic nerds you may ever meet. I’m talking about the quidditch team. Drive past Reservoir Park any Tuesday or Thursday evening and you could catch a glimpse of the team practicing in autumn until there is snow on the ground or in spring until nationals has passed. All I ask of you is to not be the type of person to yell dumb things at us that no one can understand anyway. Honestly, it’s a waste of your breath.

Some of the other fantastic clubs I’ve either been involved with to some degree or plan to be involved with are Students for Choice, Students for a Democratic Society, Social Justice Activists, Students Against Sexual Assault, YouSpeak Poetry Community, BLinc, Ballroom Dance Company, Be the Match, SPEAK, Alpha Kappa Psi, and probably some more that I’m forgetting. I highly recommend checking out those organizations if you aren’t already familiar with them.

These college years are the perfect time for finding the causes and activities that you care the most about and you have the extraordinary opportunity to get involved with and drop as many as you see fit. There is so much to do and as long as you are able to manage a few extra hours per week, I would absolutely try finding something to get involved with. Why not even make yourself a club passport and go around to as many groups as you can and spend a meeting or evening with them? You could find your new calling in life or treat yo’ self after going to a certain number of different events. It’s up to you! The world is your oyster! Be your own pearl!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
