I've been working fast food for roughly four years throughout high school and now college. Let me start by saying, working in customer service is very hard. Customers will regularly yell at you for things you can't control, be rude for no reason and make you feel like you're so beneath them. So, I'm writing this to say just be kind to people.
This doesn't just apply to your cashiers, servers etc. This applies to everyone you encounter. You never know what someone is going through. Be kind. Here are some ways you can spread kindness and love to others:
1. Reach out to someone you think may need it.
Sometimes a call, text or even a Twitter DM can go a long way. Make sure you reach out to people and show them you're thinking of them.
2. Pay it forward.
If you're out, try paying it forward to someone behind you in line. You would be surprised how such a simple act can really brighten somebody's day.
3. Write hand written letters.
Take the time to write your friends a hand written letter. If you're far away from each other this summer try mailing it to them. Getting a letter is so meaningful and appreciated.
4. Try to compliment others.
Telling your friends, family or even your co-workers thank you and complimenting them can go a long way.
5. Reach out to an old friend.
Reach out and talk to that friend you may have had a falling out with or haven't spoke to in a while. Get things on good terms and let people know you're still here for them.
6. Leave a decent tip.
Always, always tip your servers! Be kind and tip them a little extra next time. Even if the service wasn't "perfect." You never know what kind of day they're having or what's going on. Show them their hard work is appreciated and noticed.
7. Grab a friend coffee.
When you're going to get your usual Starbucks or Dunkin' grab an extra coffee for your best friend or your roommate.
8. Smile at everyone and be kind.
Smile. Say thank you. Be kind to everyone you encounter for the 2 minutes they pass by your life. Spread kindness. Spread love. Be a part of making the world a better place.
