Bleacher Report recently compiled a list of the NFL teams with the highest number of arrests in the past five years. The most shocking statistic in the report is that in a span of 260 weeks, there have been 260 arrests in the NFL. "On Monday, just days after the San Francisco 49ers released Aldon Smith in light of the linebacker's fifth arrest in three years, former San Jose Mercury News reporter Mike Rosenberg compiled and shared team-by-team statistics of NFL arrests over the last five years." (Bleacher Report) The top five football teams with the most arrest are as follows:
1. Vikings: 18 arrests
2. Broncos: 16 arrests
3. Colts: 13 arrests
3. Buccaneers: 13 arrests
5. 49ers: 12 arrests
Since 2000, the Vikings team was on the forefront for the most arrests in the NFL with 48 arrests. After seeing these shocking statistics, I took to the Internet to see what type of crimes are most common among NFL players. "The most common illegal activity among NFL players, and the one that poses the greatest risk to the general public, is drunk driving. On average, 18 players get charged with driving under the influence every single year, and usually the league just gives them a slap on the wrist. The poster boy for NFL drunk drivers is former St. Louis Rams defensive end Leonard Little. His most serious offense came in 1998, when he drove home for a party with a .19 blood alcohol content and killed a St. Louis woman. His punishment? Four years probation, a thousand hours of community service, and an eight-game suspension—for ending somebody’s life. But hey, he learned his lesson, right? He’ll never drive drunk again? Nope. In 2004, Little was pulled over again on suspicion of drunk driving and failed several field sobriety tests. He got another two years probation for that, but no suspension." (TotalProSports.Com)
The primary offenders are wide receivers. With 253 arrests, indictments, and citations, drunk driving more than doubles the second most common offense of drugs (102 arrests, indictments, and citations). So why are NFL players committing these crimes and not receiving an equitable punishment?
