The month of April is coming to rapid conclusion, which means one of the most highly anticipated off-season events in professional sports is nearing its beginning: the National Football League Draft. Former collegiate football stars and NFL hopefuls will flock to the city of Chicago in hopes of achieving their life-long dreams, which is hearing their name called by commissioner Roger Goodell. It will be the second consecutive year that the draft will be held at the Auditorium Theatre in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The previous 50 drafts were all held in New York City, so it is quite the change of scenery.
Nevertheless, this year's 2016 NFL Draft is already evolving into one of the most compelling in recent memory. Numerous different draft analysts and football writers have multiple combinations of how the Top 10 will play out. This draft class is very heavy with talented defensive pass rushers, corner backs, offensive lineman and very few intriguing quarterback prospects. The Philadelphia Eagles most recently agreed to one of the most shocking deals in recent off-season history with the Cleveland Browns, in which they traded away their eighth overall pick, third round pick, fourth round pick, a 2017 first-round pick, and a 2018 second-round pick for the #2 overall selection in this year's draft. This only makes the outlook of the first round all the more interesting and has the entire Eagles fan base scratching their heads in confusion and disgust. Although predicting the NFL Draft is a very hit-or-miss process, I have put together my picks for how the Top 10 will play out.
#1 Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff QB, Cal-Berkeley
As stated before, this year's 2016 draft class of collegiate quarterbacks is one of the more uninteresting in recent seasons; however, the Rams are in desperate need at this position. Jared Goff is a guy that fits this bill. Last season the (then) St. Louis Rams made a trade with the Eagles that sent up-and-coming QB Nick Foles to The Gateway City for injury-prone and former #1 overall pick Sam Bradford to Philly. Foles ended up not living up to expectations whatsoever and was benched for back-up Case Keenum, which was also a disaster. Goff achieved a break-out season under head coach Sonny Dykes, throwing for 4719 yards and 43 touchdowns, along with a 161.3 rating. He led his team to an 8-5 record and a blowout victory in the Armed Forces Bowl. Goff's size and athleticism is what has stood out about junior signal-caller. At 6'4 215 pounds, his physical frame gives him an advantage in the pocket. The LA Rams are seeking to turn their recently mediocre franchise around as they make the big move to the Hollywood stage. Many mock drafts have been back-and-forth about the Rams either taking Carson Wentz or Goff, but it appears in all likelihood that Jeff Fisher is rolling with the Pac-12 standout.
#2 Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz QB, North Dakota State
The City of Brotherly Love is left in a state of uncertainty when the Eagles traded up to the #2 overall pick, which leads to accurate speculation that owner Jeffrey Lurie is leaning to select the second-best QB prospect in the draft, Carson Wentz. This decision would appear to be questionable considering they just fairly recently signed starter Sam Bradford to a two-year $36 million extension, along with adding former Kansas City back-up QB Chase Daniel to a three-year $21 million deal. Therefore, the million dollar question for every Philly fan is, why waste a first round selection on another quarterback? The FCS standout led the NDSU Bison to back-to-back national title victories. He wasn't given the starting job until his junior season, but he quickly took off throwing for 4,762 yards in two years and 42 touchdowns. One sign of concern for NFL teams leading up to draft season was the lack of competitive teams he faced at the FCS level, but his stellar performances at the scouting combine and pro day proved to many NFL teams that he was ready to take on a starting job at the professional level. It is clear that this is who the Eagles want as their QB of the future and hopefully the long-term answer in Philadelphia.
#3 San Diego Chargers: Laremy Tunsil OT, Ole Miss
This pick makes perfect sense for Ken Whisenhunt's offense. The Chargers had many offensive line issues last season and needs to provide solid protection for the most important player on the roster, Philip Rivers. The talent is definitely there for the Ole Miss Rebel star and the addition of Tunsil pretty much solidifies the left tackle position for a very long time, possibly the next decade. Rivers had one of his best statistical seasons at 34 years old last season throwing for 4,792 yards and 29 touchdowns. With receiving options of Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin, and Stevie Johnson, the former NC State product could put up more big numbers in 2016 with the right personnel up front. Tunsil brings quality protection on the interior offensive line, which is critical for a Chargers team that looks to revive their franchise after a brutal 4-12 finish in 2015. Rivers needs comfort and time in the pocket in order for San Diego to win in what should be a highly competitive AFC West division.
#4 Dallas Cowboys: Ezekiel Elliott RB, Ohio State
There have been many debates about where the very talented Buckeye running back would land in the draft. With the elite offensive line of the Dallas Cowboys, Elliott could be a perfect fit in Scott Linehan's offensive scheme. However, Darren McFadden was the Cowboy's top option at RB and ran for 1,089 yards along with the addition of free agent Alfred Morris from Washington. So many question whether they will even need collegiate superstar, considering that any tailback in the NFL could succeed behind the Dallas O-line. Yet, adding Elliott to the mix makes the Cowboy offense very potent and dangerous along with a healthy Tony Romo throwing to a healthy Dez Bryant. Elliott ran for 3,699 yards in his sophomore and junior seasons under head coach Urban Meyer with 41 touchdowns. It has been rare for a running back to be selected in the Top 10 in recent years, but he is the exception. Elliott is an elite three-down RB who can also serve as a reliable receiver and pass protector. Behind that Dallas front seven with the versatile skill set that Elliott brings to the table, he could be a very considerable candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year if taken fourth overall.
#5 Jacksonville Jaguars: Joey Bosa DE, Ohio State
Yes, there will be back-to-back Ohio State Buckeyes taken in the Top Five. Joey Bosa is without a doubt the best defensive end prospect in the entire draft. The former All-American could possibly go anywhere in the Top Five, but I feel he fits best on this potentially dominant Jacksonville front seven. The combination of Bosa along with the 2015 Jaguar first round pick, Dante Fowler, Jr. could spice up the pass rush significantly. With the front office deciding to keep Gus Bradley at the helm for another season, the Jaguars are a team that appears to be taking a big step as a franchise and attempt to end a run of five straight losing seasons. Jacksonville made waves in the off-season, most notably with the signing of former Broncos defensive tackle Malik Jackson to a four-year $90 million deal. The Jags are putting together a dangerous defensive front along with a developing offense led by a breakout season from second year quarterback Blake Bortles who enters his third season out of Central Florida. Bortles threw for 4,428 yards and 35 touchdowns in 2015. The assertive defensive line presence of Bosa enhances a rapidly improving Jaguars team that seeks to make noise in the AFC.
#6 Baltimore Ravens: Jalen Ramsey CB, Florida State
Ramsey is considered by many to be the top overall prospect in the draft, but he fits best with this Ravens secondary featuring Eric Weddle and Ladarius Webb at safety along with CB Jimmy Smith. It would be a surprise to see a guy with as much talent and athleticism as he does at 6'1194 pounds. The Ravens underachieved greatly by their most recent standards in 2015 finishing with a dreadful 5-11 overall record. It all began with the torn Achilles injury of veteran linebacker Terrell Suggs in Week One and then quarterback Joe Flacco tearing his ACL in Week 11. Baltimore has been a consistently deep playoff team in the last eight seasons under head coach John Harbaugh, so the Ravens fan base was highly disappointed in the outcome of 2015. This franchise has the reputation of maintaining a dominant defense every year, but have had multiple departures of elite defensive players in the last four seasons including; Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Cary Williams, Haloti Ngata, and so on. The addition of Ramsey to the group of talented Baltimore defensive backs would be a huge upgrade to a Ravens team and defense that seeks to return to postseason contention. The FSU star is due to make an instant impact.
#7 San Francisco 49ers: Ronnie Stanley OT, Notre Dame
Stanley is one of the most elite offensive lineman on the draft board and could start immediately at left tackle in San Francisco. The former member of the Fighting Irish is also a very good fit in the new Chip Kelly offense. While the quarterback situation remains uncertain for the Niners, the addition of Stanley will make any QB very comfortable in the backfield. At 6'5 315 pounds, he is bound to have a monster rookie season on the offensive line and fills a huge hole at the offensive tackle position. Stanley alongside Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley should solidify both the right and left tackle position in the offensive front for Curtis Modkins's unit, even with the departure of left guard Alex Boone. The 49ers were once among the NFC's elite teams, but when Jim Harbaugh left to coach at the University of Michigan, this franchise appeared to have no sense of direction. This off-season, a new hope arrived with the hiring of former Eagle head coach Chip Kelly and the potential selection of the standout offensive tackle is a nice starting point as the Niners seek to rebuild themselves and return to the playoffs sooner rather than later.
#8 Cleveland Browns: Myles Jack OLB, UCLA
Myles Jack is arguably the best and most complete player in the entire draft. He's an outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense, along with being a run-and-hit linebacker in a 3-4 defense. He is also very skilled at running from each sideline to track down ball carriers. Any NFL general manager should want that in a defensive player. If it wasn't for tearing his meniscus back in October of 2015, he would be a clear #1 overall pick. Many analysts and scouts are marking the knee injury as a big red flag for any team to take Jack as their first round selection, but this guy is so freaky good that he is well worth the risk of injury. It would be difficult for head coach Hue Jackson to pass up on a player with this much raw talent that you simply can't teach. He racked up a total of 117 solo tackles in three seasons for the Bruins. If Jack falls to number eight overall, it should be a no-brainer to add him to Ray Horton's defensive unit. With the Browns' huge recent trades with the Eagles, they need to choose wisely in this year's draft. It is clear that Hue Jackson has a plan and that plan should begin with selecting the versatile linebacker in an attempt to build this Cleveland franchise into an eventual success and bring winning long-awaited football to the Dawg Pound.
#9 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Shaq Lawson DE, Clemson
The Buccaneers want to beef up their pass rush and selecting Shaq Lawson at ninth overall will definitely do the job. Picking Lawson adds to an talent-filled defensive front for the Bucs, along with Gerald McCoy, Akeem Spence and Robert Ayers. He was Clemson's top defensive player by a long shot; however, many experts have him falling out of the Top 10. A common prediction for the Buccaneers first round pick is CB Vernon Hargreaves out of the University of Florida. I would not be surprised if Tampa went the defensive back route, but Lawson seems like a much smarter addition. He was one of the primary factors in the Clemson Tiger's national championship run as he totaled 12.5 sacks in 2015. The Bucs have not had a winning season since 2010 and with them selecting QB Jameis Winston at #1 overall, Tampa is on a solid path for success. The addition of Lawson revamps the Buccaneer defensive line and makes them a force to be reckoned with for any opposing offensive line.
#10 New York Giants: Laquon Treadwell WR, Ole Miss
The Giants are a team that will be hard to figure out in this upcoming draft, simply because they have many needs. They probably will go the offensive line or defensive end route, but I will go out on a limb and say they take a wide receiver with the tenth overall selection. The G-Men desperately need a play-maker outside of Odell Beckham, Jr. and with the health status of Victor Cruz still up in the air, Treadwell could potentially be a good fit into this offense. Part of the Giants struggles in 2015 was the lack of weapons Eli Manning had around him. Treadwell can fill a big hole in the NY receiving game. However, he ran a slow 4.63 second 40-yard dash at the combine, which is very alarming for many GM's. However, I think this guy is worth the risk from a speed standpoint based on his performance in 2015 with 82 receptions for 1153 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has 2293 total receiving yards and 21 touchdowns in his career at Ole Miss. The offensive tackle out of Michigan State Jack Conklin would be my second choice at 10th overall to give Eli some much needed protection. This is a very hit or miss selection at #10, but if the Giants want to contend for the NFC East crown then the Giants need to give Manning another reliable target to throw to. Treadwell is that guy.
