Traveling For The Soul

Traveling to any place is always a great time, but more than just the views, your mind will thank you for the trip.

What's better than escaping reality for a few days, or even months, and disappearing to a different state, or better yet, a foreign country? Nothing, I'd say. However, traveling is more than just taking in surreal views and tasting food made by other inhabitants of this big ol' world we live in. It's about observing cultures and accepting and understanding how they live.

Of course, it's not easy to just come up with $500 and travel the world in eight days but who says you have to do it all so quickly and while you're still young? Spoiler alert: You have a whole lifetime to travel. There is nothing and no one that should hold you back from seeing every corner of the world. I mean, after all, why else would we live on this planet if we didn't go out and see all of the neat stuff it stores? None of this is cheap, but seeing the world will be worth all of your life savings (hopefully).

Once you have the funds to do as you please, now comes the fun part: you get to see the world! Just remember to actually go out and explore the area where you're staying in, because being locked up in a resort for a time won't help with expanding your mind, maybe just your sun tan. You need to go out and see the residents of the city. How they work, how they live, where they live, what they eat and what they do for fun. You have stepped into a different world and now it's your responsibility to let it soak in and allow you to view others from a different lens.

This doesn't mean that you have to follow by and do what another culture believes and does, but it means to show you a different way of life. Once you see this, your mind will open up to accepting others and appreciating their way of life. This will then help you in so many ways. First and foremost, it may make you appreciate all that you have in your own life if you visit a third world country for example. What you see on social media and what you see in person are two very different things and what you see in person can change your mentality forever.

Secondly, it may teach you the importance of always keeping an open mind. You never know what someone is going through until you see it for yourself. So once you see the way of living of others, it may show you how similar you are to them which connects to you on a whole different level. Keeping an open mind in any situation will always bring nothing but good for you.

Lastly, viewing parts of the world and its beauty can put things in a completely different perspective. Once you grasp the size of the world, you may see your own personal problems as almost insignificant. This is not to say that your problems don't matter, but to make sure they don't get bigger than what they should be. Many problems can be resolved, so needless to say, they will get fixed.

So no matter your bank account, or maybe your fear of flying, find a way to get out there. See the world, not from the tiny screen you're reading this on, but see it up close and in person with eyes and mind wide open. There is so much to be seen, and so much to learn from. The world awaits.

Safe travels, friends.

two women enjoying confetti

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
