Tis the season for Le-Laf, fa la la la la, let's all go nuts!
For the last 152 years, Lehigh University and Lafayette College come together for the oldest recognized NCAA football rivalry. With or without the use of libations, during the seven-to-ten days leading up to the game, Lehigh students celebrate in more ways than known to man. One of those events is the legendary Bed Races, where groups of five students race modified bed frames up and down the University Walk.
Every year, there's a crop of seniors who give it their all, knowing this is their last LeLaf, wishing they could do it all over again. Little do these seniors know, there is a very similar event to Bed Races that occurs quite frequently across the nation. Behold: the 24 Hours of LeMons. A parody of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, this incredibly American, nationwide race event is a true gem of the automotive world. Just like LeLaf, the LeMons race is full of shenanigans, but isn't racing incredibly expensive?
What makes LeMons different from NASCAR or F1 is while those vehicles are worth millions of dollars, this twenty four hour endurance race surrounds one major rule: spend no more than five hundred dollars on purchasing and developing the car. Note: safety equipment is exempt from this restriction because there is still a degree of sanity here.
Spending five hundred dollars would be easy if this event was just all show and tell. This is not the case. The reason why the race is a genuine twenty four hour endurance race. Yes, that five hundred dollar piece of junk not only has to run for a full day, but it also has to go through the stress of racing at the limit for as long as possible. LeMons is truly one of the most punishing, yet incredibly entertaining events you could ever watch.
So, to the seniors regretting the end of their LeLaf experience, I challenge you to emulate that same spirit by gathering a group of friends and entering the 24 Hours of LeMons. Happy LeLaf everybody!
