My Experience and How to Make This Year Count

Make this year count for you and go after something you've always wanted.

Welcome 2017. Hopefully, this year will be full of growth and fun surprises. But if my New Year's Eve was any sneak preview to how the year is going to be, I'm not quite sure what to think.

I had to work. I am a waitress at a pizzeria, and it was supposed to be busy tonight. I went home with $20 from a Saturday night. Usually, I average about $100. It wasn't good. Then my coworker decided to pick a fight with me and ruined my mood. Very, very rude.

I went home very upset. All I wanted to do was go see Why Him? with my dad. I called the local theater three times, but to no avail after attempting to purchase tickets several times online. Finally, I was so upset that I got in my car and drove to the theater. I asked for two tickets for the movie only to be denied. Apparently, the film was being shown in an auditorium solely reserved for twenty-one and up. Great.

I tried to buy other tickets, but I wasn't about to pay $33 for a movie I didn't want to see at 11pm in addition to a dinner which would estimate to about $45. That is unnecessarily expensive for a movie.

I called my Aunt and she recommended I try Caldwell Theater. Sure enough, they allowed 17+ (I'm 18). So, my Dad and I got to see Why Him?.

The movie was hilarious in the crudest way. James Franco's character, Laird, was hysterical. He cursed in every line and was excessively touchy, kissing his girlfriend's mother on the lips. He made the movie as funny as it was, although a scene where the mom was high was entertaining.

It ended up being a very bittersweet New Year's Eve celebration. But I'm happy to have been with my family instead of being alone like I thought I'd be.

Nevertheless, I believe this year is full of new experiences and room to grow. I fully intend to achieve every one of my resolutions, as corny as that is. It's a good idea to set goals for yourself. To boost confidence levels, it may benefit you to reach a goal you have set for yourself. Imagine competing something you've always wished you had done and how good it would make you feel. By setting smaller goals geared toward reaching a larger target, it makes the finish line seem that much closer.

Make this year count for you and go after something you've always wanted. I'll share that I am aspiring to get in shape by the end of this year, and I fully intend on reaching my goals. Let's get to the top and feel great on the way! After all, the only person who can make you feel bad, is you. Your mind is powerful, embrace it.

Good Luck!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
