"New year, new me!" I roll my eyes at the tens of instagram photos I see each New Year with this caption. Do people really think that the second it strikes midnight turning December 31st into January 1st, anything about them has changed?
I may sound bitter, maybe even cynical, but New Year's is an overrated holiday. For one night, people get drunk off the hope (and champagne) that they will work out, eat healthier, fall in love, be a better friend, and/or improve as a person as soon as the calendar year changes. Maybe they will for a few days or even a few weeks, but then they will soon fall right back into the same routines and bad habits that they had been repeating the whole previous year. So why do we pretend that a new year means a new us? Why do we waste our time coming up with meaningless resolutions?
The truth is, with a new year comes the same you. You will make the same mistakes and the same choices you have been, because the truth is that a new year is not nearly enough to make any type of changes. You have to find that from within. If you want to change, don't wait. Find the inspiration from within, not from a changing date on the calendar.
Start living a healthier lifestyle today. Call your friends and family that you have been pushing to the side. Run a couple of miles on the treadmill. Open your heart and meet new people. Don't feel the pressure of a changing date to make you think you need to change something. You are wonderful the way you are, and if there are aspects about yourself to improve, don't wait. The time is now. While a new year may not mean a new you, today can be the time to make that change. New day, new you.
