The year is 2016. In the past 50 years there have been life-changing inventions and record-breaking discoveries. But how much has life really changed in the past 50 years? A side by side comparison of a newspaper from 1969 and a present day newspaper show how different life really was 50 years ago.
This edition of the St. Louis Globe was published in 1969 with a headline about the moon landing.
The present day newspaper used for comparison is the St. Louis Post-Dispatch with a much less exciting headline than the paper published in 1969.
1. The Price
As you can see, the price of a newspaper jumped from just 10 cents in 1969 to $1.50 in 2016.
2. Clothing Ads
Newspaper ads for clothing in 1969 were drawings instead of photographs, as are used today. The drawings of women with tall hair and men in tailored suits perfectly capture the style of the 60's. As you can see by the present day Macy's ad, a well fitted suit on a handsome man never goes out of style.
3. Car Ads
The main difference that can be noted between the car ad in 1969 and the present day car ad is the price of the cars. As you can see, a sports car in 1969 went for a whopping $1,895.
4. Sports Results
While a lot has changed over the years, one thing that has stood the test of time is the news that everyone really cares about: sports results. Whether it is the major league standings of 1969 (special attention paid to the Cardinals, of course), or the March Madness bracket of 2016, sports are timeless.
5. The Funny Pages
One thing that has remained the same over the past 50 years is Marmaduke, whose antics can still be found in the comic strips on the funny pages.
When looking at the newspaper from 1969 and comparing it to a present day newspaper, it is easy to see the ways in which life has changed. For instance, there are far less ads in the newspaper, probably due to more companies switching over to internet ads. It is also easy to see the ways life has stayed the same. The same things that were important to people 50 years ago are still important today: money, cars and especially, sports.
