The News Is Neglecting Important Things

Is no one going to talk about the important things that are going on right now? Like yes, when something big happens with the government we pay attention to it, but only for a couple of days and then something happens with celebrities and we move on to that. When is the last time you heard about Flint, Michigan? And there still isn't much being done to stop global warming. Do we really care about celebrities more than our lively hoods?

I will admit that I don't keep up with news like that as much as I would like to. However, at this point, a lot of the news sites are very biased and a lot of them just talk about the dumb things that celebrities do. Then when celebrities do try to speak up about things that need to be talked about they are told to shut up and that they don't know anything. Which is stupid because those celebrities are educated and are trying to use their status to do something but nobody listens to them. It just seems like we don't want to feel guilty for the things that we are causing.

We need to start spending more than 24 hours on subjects that don't involve celebrities. We need to have things relevant until they are fixed or its starting to be fixed. Especially since we are starting to become numb to things that happen so much because we keep hearing about it, but nothing is done. Like the Mosque shooting that just happened in New Zeland immediately had action taken after it where in America we have to have marches for things to happen and even then not much happens. People also are relying on this new generation to fix things. Like yes, we do need to do stuff, but also there are generations above us that could still be doing things about these subjects. People just think since we are a young generation and we have our whole lives to live that we should be dealing with this on our own and it's our problem now.

Now we do have a large voice and maybe even a majority voice, but that doesn't necessarily mean that everything should be put on us. We shouldn't have to be the ones to fix everything wrong with the world. We all don't even have to agree on the same things as far as political views go. People can have different political views and still get Flint clean water or have different political views and still clean up trash and recycle so it doesn't end up in our oceans. People are so ignorant about these types of things because we never hear about it. We only hear about things that will get people fighting because we feed off of drama and that's not a good thing.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
