Looking At Things From A New Perspective

What does an image convey to you?

Last year, around this time, I started a photography project that I called Looking at Things From a New Perspective. I was inspired by one of my roommates who was in DAAP (the college of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning at UC) . She had so many cool projects that forced her to draw, paint or whatever she had to do in so many different ways. My project has a very similar perspective: to take ordinary objects and view them in ways that you normally would not.

Within the past few months, busy with both work and school, I have unfortunately not been able to continue it. I put it on hold. Any free time or creativity I had went into either of the two books I have been writing recently.

Sure, it's easy to just take a picture on my phone, but to edit it and make it to the standards that I want it to be at, takes A LOT of time. Something that us college kids do not have much of. (Trust me, I wish I had more of it, but there is only so much one can do in 24 hours!)

But why am I writing this?

I want to inspire you. I want you to think of ordinary everyday objects you use daily but in multiple perspectives. To use your creative juices to create something that not everybody else can explain but yourself.

"What if I'm not creative?"

Everyone is creative in their own way. Maybe, instead of words, you express yourself in images or in equations. I may not be able to do that, but you can. That is what makes this project so amazing. It is not something that is individualized. Anyone can participate. I thought this was a great way to effectively express myself just because I could take a picture of literally anything I wanted. It did not limit my sources.

"What are some great examples?"

As I said, it can be an equation, a tree in your backyard, your family, anything. It does not even have to have an explanation for it either. The image could just be something that represents something powerful. Something that stands out to you. Something that you cannot even put into words. Something that takes your breath away.

Nothing can stand in your way. Not your gender, disabilities, sexuality...nothing. It does not judge and is limitless to what you post.

Now, this is what I want you to do. I want you to challenge yourself. Post a powerful image and use the hashtag: #lookingatthingsthroughanewperspective. See what others have posted.

OR...

You could check out some of the images I have posted under the same name.

Hope you enjoyed this one, and I'll see you next week with a new one. Toodles!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
