Living just 20 minutes from New York City has greatly opened up my exploration potential over the last eight months, and I now feel very well versed on the in's and out's of this great city. With springtime comes the ability to stroll through the streets without fear of your ears freezing and falling off, meaning every weekend is available for a new adventure. Five weekends left at school means five more adventures, so here are five places to visit before it all ends for the summer.
1. Sunbathe in Central Park
Sure, you may have a park in your town, but does it really compare to Central Park? Take a day, or a few hours to yourself to explore the midpoint of New York City and soak in the sun. Bring a blanket, buy a coffee and enjoy that book you've been wanting to read all while taking in the central scene of the city.
2. Brooklyn Smorgasburg
If you're looking for artsy, quirky and cool, then this is the place for you. Compiled of various vintage vendors and cinnamon-ey, heavenly created donuts, this little hole in the wall is a must visit before bidding New York farewell. Where else are you supposed to find an old-school L.L Bean flannel and circle sunglasses for under $15?
3. Chelsea Market
I can't say I've visited this charming location yet, but it's next on the bucket list, so I figured it would be worth adding. Shopping and food are two of my (and most college students) favorite things, so this seems like the place to be. On top of having an Anthropologie and some hella fancy restaurants, Chelsea Market appears to be very aesthetically pleasing and superb for the Instagram or VSCO. While you're there, make a pit stop at the High Line, a fascinating sky high garden just a few steps away.
4. Brooklyn Bridge
Of all the touristy locations to visit, this one has the potential to be one of my favorites. Not only does the bridge have some pretty views, but once again, the aesthetic and photographic potential are overwhelming. I may be biased due to the fact that Brooklyn is for sure my future home, but this is a must visit.
5. Museum of Modern Art
Although I cannot say I really ever understand Modern Art (who does?), it's never boring to look at canvases full of abstract shapes and vibrant colors. Also, who would pass up the opportunity to check out some vintage Andy Warhol art among other classics? Good for a casual Sunday with a friend or two, art is always the way to go.
It'll be hard to say farewell to this splendid city at the end of these five weeks, so make sure you make the most of the time you have here! College is short, so make sure to find time for things more valuable than the drama that can seem all consuming. Exploring is good for the soul!
