Dear New York City,
I love you. I mean, sure you kind of need a shower, but the smell of street food and sewage is oddly comforting after a while. It's an affirmation that I am where I want to be. The loud sounds of honking, crowds of people moving in opposite directions, bright lights gleaming—all of it reminds me why I chose to be close to you. As well as everything you have to offer to someone who is willing to work for it. And some entertainment after a long week!
Even though everyone says that Time Square isn't the "real" New York, and I get really irritated by it, there is still something so magical and glamorous about all of the lights. The lights remind me of the first time I came to the city for my 13th birthday and the wonder was new and fresh. Sure the creepy Elmo and Olaf aren't quite as charming, but the magic stays as long as eye contact is avoided.
On that same trip I experienced my first Broadway show ("Wicked"), and completely fell in love with professional theatre. This has led to an excessive amount of Broadway rush tickets for anything available with my current theatre friends. Now, the center of all things theatre is a 40-minute train ride away, and I have the best people to go with. So not only are you my favorite city, but you are also home to my absolute favorite art form!
Speaking of art, your museums are mind blowing. Everyone should visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art at least once. There is history, classical art, modern art, entire suits of armor and a garden of statues! There is also the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Natural History. And if those things sound a little bit on the boring side, there are always the more out-there options like the Museum of Sex and Ripley's Believe it or Not.
Of course, these activities are a good time, but there's a different kind of good time with the food scene. The options are endless! There is always a new food fad being discussed online and guess where you can find it: New York City. Raindrop cake, rainbow bagels, shaved ice cream, egg waffle cones, homemade ramen noodles and so much more! Not to mention classics like a good deli that does pastrami on rye.
New York City, you are the best, even when it is impossible to find a bathroom after walking around several blocks. You have so much to offer. There is never a dull moment with you. You are full of politics and art. I walk out of Penn Station and onto your streets and I feel like I can change the world. So thank you.
