This year, I've decided that my New Years Resolutions need to be fairly simple. Close to the heart, nothing crazy, easily attainable.
All too often, I see people setting their goals for the year and giving themselves an absolute overload of things to accomplish. Of course, two weeks into January, they've long forgotten the passion they had for their resolutions.
If you're a person who wants to make resolutions that actually last, I want to encourage you to make resolutions like these. Here are my three simple (but important) New Years Resolutions for 2017.
1. Let it go.
If it won't affect you in 30 seconds after it's resolved, don't let it bother you. Someone stole your parking spot that you were about to turn into? It's not worth your good mood. Someone in front of you in the grocery store checkout pulls out coupons AND loose change to count out? They're just trying to make sure they stay under their budget this holiday season.
Whenever I travel, whether it be in a car or by plane, I always see frustrated travelers. I, too, get a little bit of road rage. But I've noticed that shortly after I overtake a car that's driving 10 mph under, or after the security officer has to pat me down for the fourth time, it doesn't matter anymore. I'm already on to the next thing.
I don't want to let that negative mindset harbor any longer than it takes for me to decide that it's not worth my good mood to have it there. This year, I want to focus on letting the small stuff go.
2. Take it back to basics.
If there's one somewhat superficial thing I'm interested in, it's my skin. In my (even more so) younger years, I wore a ton of makeup to hide what I considered to be undesirable imperfections. This year, now more than ever, I want to spend my money not on makeup products to cover up my skin; but on products that will leave my skin looking and feeling better.
If you've read my other articles or if you know me personally, you know I don't wear a lot of makeup. I'm not saying that makeup is not fun or worth investing in, but I am saying that I'd like to focus more on the actual skin this year. Even if that means going out with skin that I wouldn't ordinarily feel great about.
3. Do more yoga.
I don't want to set myself to an "every day" or "twenty minutes a day" kind of ~strict regime~. I'm not doing yoga to lose weight or to tone up -- I'm strictly doing it for spiritual reasons.
Even if you're not crazy into the idea of yoga, I encourage every single person to do yoga at least once a week. Not only is it great for flexibility and easing soreness, but taking that 7-60 minutes for yourself in the morning just to turn your phone over and focus on yourself and how you feel is absolutely invaluable.
Again, if you can't do more than a few minutes, and you can't do every day, and you can't afford a yoga studio membership, and you don't own a mat, YOU CAN STILL FIND WAYS TO FLOW! Youtube is full of awesome (and free!) yoga practices that can be tailored to what you feel you need the most that day. So whether you're an athlete who wants some stretches for sore legs and feet, or you're someone who works at a desk all day who needs help with their crunched spine, there are just a thousand ways to get on your hands and feet and ~find what feels good~. Namaste, y'all.
