With this article, I’m talking to everyone who has ever said New Years resolutions are dumb, and I must say you are not right on this one, friend! After the party has ended and you've had plenty of water, it's time to think about your goals, big, small or anywhere in between. Any time people are motivated to make a positive change in their lives, it’s awesome. The New Year just happens to be a great starting point because it’s a time where a lot of people are trying to make changes, and that can be motivating. So don't you dare tell anyone their resolution is stupid, and go ahead, get crazy and make your own (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, am i right??).
The main reason people don't like New Years resolutions is because of the lack of follow through. First of all, even if you do something positive for your life for only a couple months, it’s worth every bit of it. Secondly, fear of failure cannot hold you back from starting something. If that were a valid excuse then nothing important would ever get done, because hard things take risks and risks can be scary. On that note, even if you get off track of your resolution for a week or even a month, you can always start back again. Starting at the New Year is a cool time, but so is a random weekend when you think to yourself “I wish I was still doing (insert healthy, rad, exciting resolution here)."
With a brand new year coming your way, you can’t help but reflect on your past, whether you like it or not. So, you might as well pick something you can improve on and do your best to change it. If it’s your weight (like 38% of the population according to University of Scranton Journal of Clinical Psychology) or if it’s to quit a bad habit, to organize your life, to read more or anything ever, tell your friends about it and have them help keep you accountable! You are way more likely to achieve your goals if you tell people about them. This way even if they can’t hit the gym with you every time, they’ll ask you about it, and you aren’t going to want to tell them you’ve been skipping out.
So now that you know my thoughts, make a resolution of some shape or form and do your best with it! If you have to make yourself restart every two weeks, who cares? At least you're trying to improve yourself; staying stagnant is dumb and complaining about your problems without trying to fix them is even worse. Motivate your friends and motivate yourself because this new year is going to be the best yet, I can feel it.
