New Year, New You

A few New Years Resolutions you should actually take the time to make in 2017.

Smile More - It just looks so dang good on you.

Laugh More - They say laughter's the best medicine and it's true!

Well I don't know who exactly they are to be quite honest, but they're not lying! It's been proven that laughter reduces stress hormones and strengthens the immune system. And even though you might get a cramp in your stomach or cheeks from smiling so big, laughter actually will leave you with more relaxed muscles when you're done chuckling. So even if you have to pretend, I'm sure staring at yourself in the mirror and laughing for no reason might crack ya up a bit. Or just be insanely awkward... Test it out, let me know.

Dance More - I don't care if you don't know how, that's not a valid excuse.

Grab a partner, spin em’ round and round. I bet you’ll both be smiling and laughing with one another. Or well, maybe at one another. But hey it still counts, and guess what? That’s three resolutions right there!

Be Present – Because we’re all here trying to live in the future.

The time is Now. So let it be that way. Stop stressing, stop thinking about what comes next, just live in the present. This could be among the most challenging of all resolutions, but it’s something I think everyone could work on now and then. But especially Now. (See what I did there?)

Drink More Green Tea – It’s good for you!

It hydrates you, gives you crazy energy, and even boosts your metabolism to get you moving! It’s seriously so magical that I can’t even begin to list all of the benefits here. There are tons of sources that go into detail about all of the lovely benefits of drinking green tea and there are also tons of flavors too! Research a little, have a little tea party, and I promise it’ll be worth it.

Manage Your Time – See how much you can accomplish in just one year.

Get a planner, a calendar, some plain old paper, whatever you prefer, and take charge. Actually writing or typing out your plans, your schedule, or even just a to-do list of tasks, will be so beneficial. Looking at your own personally written agenda will keep you responsible for accomplishing everything you’ve got on your plate, and far more motivated to do so. Check everything off, give yourself a pat on the back, and now you’ve got even more time for yourself.

Write Everything Down – Not just your To-Do’s but your Already-Done’s

What all happened to you this past year? Attempting to think far enough back can get rather foggy, and let’s face it, nobody has a perfect memory, not even close. Writing things down, whether outlines or in depth stories, or even just quotes of friends, can help jog your memory of the most forgotten subtle moments that might just put a smile on your face if you could relive them once more. Even when it comes to the big memories, you can't remember every single detail. If you don’t enjoy writing it might seem like a pain, but believe me when I say you will thank yourself later. Sometimes the subtlest details can mean the most. And once you’ve stumbled onto a whole journal full, it might just mean the world to you.

What will you choose to remember and cherish in 2017?

Another year has arrived, and before we know it, it will be a distant memory too.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
