Recently a video made by MTV composed of New Year's Resolutions for "white males." Of course, after understandable negative reactions from various people, they took the inappropriate video down.
If you want to watch the overtly racist and stereotyping video you can find it below. On that note, no, we do not all love Beyonce.
Here's the thing about this video: imagine if you will that the title read "Resolutions for Black Males" or "Resolutions for Hispanic Females." Seriously, can you imagine the uproar?
Personally, in my meager opinion, the only way to stop ridiculous and ignorant racism is to stop summing up everyone and everything to race. People don't realize the blatant hypocrisy of saying that "white people" don't experience racism or stereotyping. You want proof? Click on the video again.
However, this article is not to start debating this video. Even the Bible says that a fool won't see the folly of his own ways (Jeremiah 4:22). This article is more geared towards the awareness towards a main issue today (even though there are a lot). An issue that seems to come apparent to me is this: America ensure everyone the freedom of opinion (1st Amendment) even if that opinion is ignorant, like the one above, however, more and more people are unable to cope with that. People, for the most part, no longer know how to walk away from someone who states an opposing opinion. If someone says something opposing, the popular approach is to make sure that that person is silenced and gagged.
For instance, every person has been young at some point, and since the beginning of time young people have had poor reputations. However, for my generation, the Millennials, we don't seem to be able to cope with diverse opinions that are in favor of scolding our behavior. We need praise, and we think everyone owes it to us. In fact, the mindset of my generation, particularly in the workplace (although probably not MTV) is really well explained by Simon Sinek in the video below. I'll warn you, it's a good fifteen minutes, but it's worth it. As an incentive perhaps, the ability to have patience and a longer attention span are discussed.
Coping skills, much like common sense, is often thought to be utilized by everyone, but one look at on an overly dramatic Facebook status shows us that too many people don't have a support group to teach them to cope. If someone says, writes, or does something you find insulting, feel free to start a calm conversation with them about your disagreeing. If they won't let that happen, or you don't want to, simply walk away. America can only remain free as long as EVERYONE has the right to speak their individual mind. Racism can never truly be extinguished, it will always exist, even if every true racist is shut up, but the key to stop dividing groups of people according to race is to stop making it their defining trait of identification. So maybe some actual goals of 2017 for everyone, no matter the race or creed, can include:
1) Make it an active thought in speech and action to truly listen to someone who disagrees with you. You'd be amazed how respectful people can be when you simply listen.
2) Stop contributing to division and the "us versus them" mentality. The hate and division in America is appalling. Either stay and help grow America as a unified nation, or find one that suits your wants and needs better and move there. Negativity and hypocrisy don't help anyone.
3) Let go of the past. Perhaps the biggest argument as to why the first video above is okay is based on historical accounts. Keyword: accounts. History will always be biased and flawed because it is recorded by a human who already has their own opinion on a happening as they write it down. You want to help people? Look around. Don't pay attention to their skin color, clothes, religious beliefs, or political affiliations, just help them any way you can. You really can't change anything about the past, but you can change the present and future by your actions.
