Every year around this time, every person vows they’ll do that ‘thing’ they never got around to last year. Whether it’s joining the gym and finally getting in shape, starting their ‘best-selling novel,’ or working for that elusive 4.0…we all know these empty promises most likely won’t last.
That’s why I’ve decided this year, I’m not going to make a New Year’s resolution.
I’m a big believer in the idea that it’s always the time for self-improvement, and taking little steps is important when setting and achieving goals. That’s why I don’t think the big sweeping declarations work – because it’s way too much pressure!
It’s so unrealistic to think that anyone can change just because the calendar does. That’s why so many New Year’s resolutions fail because people get discouraged and give up and forget why they made the resolution in the first place.
By the first week of February, almost everyone stops going to the gym, and the best-selling novel is balled up in the trash can, and the C+ on the bio test you didn’t study for ruins any hope of a 4.0.
The idea of a New Year’s resolution lets you say, ‘maybe I’ll try harder next year.’ I think if we really want something, we’ll start whenever we want, and we’ll work on and off until we get it.
Plus, just because another year’s gone by, doesn’t mean you haven’t changed. We’re constantly growing and evolving, and I’m almost positive everyone has achieved something since last year, no matter if the goal was big or small!
So, in conclusion, the year might be new, but I’m the same person – one who’s dedicated to trying to improve myself no matter what day the calendar says!
Happy New Year, and here’s to another new year full of goal setting and goal achieving!
