8 New Year Resolutions People Are Tired Of Hearing About

The New Year does not mean new you

As the new year approaches, many of our friends and family post or talk about what they plan to do for their "New Years Resolution". To be quite honest with you I think they are empty promises. Many times people expect the new year to be this redo button so they can have better lives, but just because a new number rolls around does not mean anything life changing.

1. Exercising more

This is the least unoriginal new years resolution that exists. Every year a huge number of people make this resolution and buy memberships to gyms. Most people stick to this for maybe a month if they are lucky. The clutter caused in the gym is unreal in the month of January. I am all for people getting in shape and being healthy, but a new year does not mean you will suddenly become more committed to being healthy.

2. Eat healthier

This new years resolution is almost as common as the first one. People suddenly commit to eating smaller portions or low calories. Or they just look up impossible diets on Pinterest. As I said before, I am on board for people bettering themselves, but I think that change does not simply come with the new years.

3. Stop procrastinating

Many habits we want to break come with time and practice. Going cold turkey at the beginning of the year is more likely to fail. It's not good to procrastinate, but just one day deciding to change your ways is likely to fail.

4. Give up ________

A lot of people during the new year try to give something up as their resolution, such as, chocolate, junk food, or smoking, drinking, or something you would give up for Lent. Going cold turkey does not work often.

5. Find a significant other

This New Year Resolution personally drives me crazy. Relationships are built and do not have starting dates and expiration dates set in stone. You should not go out and find a partner just because you think you need one. The best relationships are formed when you aren't looking for them. They just kind of happen. Forcing a relationship to work just to have a New Year Resolution just does not work.

6. Start saving money

I have tried this one many times. Unless you have a feasible plan, it does not work. I have tried fades like putting pennies in a jar based on the number of the day within the year, but it really does not work. The only way to improve this resolution is to learn to budget or make a game plan to organize your money.

7. Become more _________

This resolution can work and it also cannot work. Some people say they want to become more handsome or more sociable. Some of these things are achievable, but personality is harder to change than skills.

8. Write in a journal everyday

Writing in a journal everyday is really difficult unless you are trying to document something so specific, like medication, devotionals, or specific responsibilities that need to be traceable.

If you want anything to change in your life, you actually have to do it. It does not have to be around new years. You can change whenever you are ready and comfortable to do so. Set goals for yourself throughout the years, instead of deciding irrationally for a new years resolution.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
