Every year we tell our selves this is going to be the best year ever. When the new year comes around again and we look back on all we have accomplished we often feel like we have failed in some areas. Nobody is perfect and lifestyle changes can be difficult, but if you want to see a visible change in 2016 the changes need to start now. This is not to say since it is a new year you need to become an entirely new person, just the best version of yourself that you can be! Here are some small changes that can add up to make a big difference:
1. Stop putting things off.
You have been planning on going on a road trip across the country with all of your friends but have never actually gone. Or maybe you thought it would be fun to try a new fun workout class like barre or hot yoga but have been too busy to get around to it. You’ve always wanted to learn to scuba dive but every time you’ve had the chance you’ve gone snorkeling instead. None of these things are terrible choices and you could easily get by the rest of your life making plans and never executing them. But where is the fun in a life without change or adventure? We all. admittedly, hate change on some level but this year make room for some new things and stop putting off all of the things you have planned to do but have never gotten around to.
2. Be healthy and stay healthy.
Fad diets and workout kicks only help a person so much. It is easy to get stuck in a rut and stop taking care of your body but since there is a new year and a fresh start, take this as an opportunity to rebuild a healthy body and mind. Fist off, decide to be a more positive person this year. When you open up your heart and mind and rid yourself of unnecessary stress and negative energy it is much easier to become more healthy and happy! Having a routine does not have to be monotonous and boring, but can be fun if you keep some variety in your schedule. For example, pick a time of day that you are free to exercise but do something different every now and then to keep yourself interested and keep things fresh. Setting personal goals is also a great way to hold yourself accountable and stay motivated. A healthy mind and body will make 2016 not only the best year yet, but the beginning of many great years to come.
3. Give to others, but don't be afraid to give to yourself.
Nothing makes you feel better than helping another being whether the gesture is grand or small. When you put positivity out into the universe you receive positivity in return and start a win-win cycle. The next chance you have to help someone else take it, you won’t regret it! With this being said it is also immensely important to take time to give back to yourself. Don’t feel guilty the next time you treat yourself to a mani-pedi or indulge in an extra glass of wine or order animal style at In-N-Out. Your life is short don’t feel bad about living it! Do what makes you happy and do more of it.
4. Apologize, forgive and be grateful.
Apologize to those you have hurt and may hurt in the future. It takes a minuscule amount of time to show someone you care. So, if you do care about someone make sure they truly do know it. With mending the ties with people you have wronged or hurt, open your heart and forgive those who have wronged you in return. You do not have to forgive for the person you have been harboring negative feelings towards, but forgive for yourself. You do not need to hold any more negativity and forgiveness can take a huge weight off of your shoulders. And finally, be grateful for everything you have and all you will receive. It is easy to take things for granted so take time to reflect and realize how much you already have rather than focusing on what you lack.
5. Prioritize.
Whether it be school, family, friends, work, sports – whatever fills your life and time should be prioritized. Going into the new year, spend more time with the people you miss. Spend less time doing meaningless things like scrolling through your phone. When you spend time with people give them your full attention and make that precious time count. Balancing family, work, studies, friends and all the extra things that make you can be difficult. But dedicating too much time to one thing can leave other important aspects of your life behind. Make sure to find a balance and try to stick with it. Relationships are just as important as grades, promotions and hobbies. Spend time with the people you love and always remember to leave room for some fun in your stressful schedule!
These five things may seem small at the time, but if you actually are determined to make a change and make 2016 the beginning of the best years to come, these five things will amount to a huge change. Use the new year as a blank slate. Be the best you that you can be! Once you set your mind on something and actually apply yourself, there is nothing you cannot achieve.
