Every year, billions of people across the world will start the new year off with lofty goals. Some will succeed, but most will get tired or forget about it within months- I know I am personally guilty of this. The quote "New Year New Me" is one of the most commonly used phrases on January first. This year, I want to think of the new year differently. I don't want to change myself as that quote implies, instead, I want to think of this year as a fresh start to practice habits that in turn will lead to a happier, healthier life.
Less screen time
I am always blown away by how much time I spend on my phone when the weekly average pops up on my notifications. My first tendency when I am bored or have free time is to go on social media or watch Netflix. It seems like this is a harmless tendency at the time, but when I see just how many hours I spend on my phone I realize how much time I am wasting. This year, my goal is to use that time I would have spent on my phone to be productive.

In college, it seems like we are always reading, from our notes to the boring textbooks. This leaves little to no room for books of our choice. I remember a time when I would hide a flashlight in my covers so I could keep reading past my bedtime.
Eat better and exercise daily
What we put into our bodies is so important to how we feel. Many people will begin crazy, restricted diets during the new year, but quickly will return to old habits. I don't want to think of this whole year is one big, long diet, but rather trying to get the nutrients that will help my body feel its best. Exercise is also crucial to our health. After a good workout, I feel less stressed and have more energy than I would be drinking a huge cup of coffee. This year I want to take time out of my days to hit the gym.
Finding the good in every day
This sounds cheesy, but when I practice thinking positively my whole outlook changes. When we focus on the negatives, we train our minds to see the bad in every situation. This year, I want to remember to look at the bigger picture and remind myself every day how lucky I am to be receiving an education with a roof over my head.
