Here's to a year full of reflection and self-appreciation.

With the first week of 2017 under our belts, it is important to reflect on what we want to get from this upcoming year. For many, it could be eating healthier, buying a gym membership or cutting out an old habit but one less documented and arguably more important would be love. Showing, appreciating and radiating more love.

Specifically, self-love. I would argue that one of the most important and beneficial goals people should be making in the new year would be learning to love ourselves. If we don't invest a piece of our time for some self-love, it is almost guaranteed we won't feel completely fulfilled.

That being said, here are a few ways to practice self-love a little more in 2017:

Take some "me" time.

The past year has been filled with many good memories and a tonne of new friendships and of course, we each want that to carry over into the months of 2016. However, it is important to take some time to yourself every once in a while. This doesn't need to be every day or even every week but it is important to take a few minutes every once in a while to take some time for yourself. Read a few chapters of your favorite book, make yourself a nice cup a tea or watch a few episodes of your current Netflix series. It is often forgotten within the chaos of busy everyday life but taking some time to yourself can be extremely powerful.

Be healthy.

People automatically assume that the first step to making healthy decisions would be buying a gym membership. To many, it most definitely is. Some people can easily dive and adapt into new routines but for others, it's not that easy. Healthy choices could be as small as starting to cut out certain things from your diet (extra salty foods, extra sugary foods, etc) or adding veggies to every meal but any change is a good change!

Organize.

Keeping your schedule, work space and bedroom clean is a great place to start in self-love. You hear all of the time that the state of your bedroom is a representation of your life, so why not keep it clean and tidy. Even if your life seems to be in a whirlwind and a little unorganized, you might as well fake it till you make it, right?

Overall, even the smallest of changes could make for a brighter year of self-love and appreciation and none of us can honestly say we couldn't use a little more of each. Here's to a year full of self-appreciation and healthy living!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
