Getting A New Start In Life

Sometimes we wish that life could have a redo button.

Getting A New Start In Life
Adrienne Elise

Sometimes we wish that life could have a redo button. One that we can click and suddenly we are given another chance to learn from our mistakes. One that gives us the chance to start over with a clean slate.

Unfortunately, life isn't that simple. If it were, then we would all be living the perfect life. As much as we might like to have the chance to start over, to take back things that we have said or done, we can't. Life is harder that way. It allows us to grow and to make mistakes because being perfect isn't the best life to live.

However, there are certain cases where we do have a chance to better ourselves and live a different life. A start to a new year allows us to learn from the mistakes of the previous one. A new semester in school lets us take new classes, starting a new, clean slate with different professors and peers. We have a chance to get better grades than the previous semester, or to be more involved. When we move to a new town or place where no one knows us it happens, too-- we get that chance to start over fresh.

This can be a great thing if you need time to get away, to forget everything and everyone for a short while. It's okay to have these feelings of wanting to escape. It's normal to want to avoid the things that cause us stress.

But in most cases, hiding from your problems isn't the best option. Leaving school because you're tired of the drama or the people who are impacting you negatively is merely running away from the issue. Often it is better to just confront the problem head-on, or to just let go of the situation or the people who are the cause of your unhappiness.

But sometimes we really do need to leave and have a clean slate. This happens when you graduate from high school or college and then move to a new city. You have to start over, most of the time, because almost no one knows you. There are a few things to take into account when wanting to start over. First, know exactly why you want to start over. Know what it is you aim to learn or do. If you're moving away because of work or anything that is out of your control, then you can still learn from the mistakes you have made in the past-- or the victories-- and better yourself from them.

Personally, I can't wait to go on to the next stage of my life because I get to have a fresh start. I may forget people that I have met in passing, but the one thing that I will never forget are the lessons that I have learned. I can't wait for my new chapter and a new beginning. As much as I love and enjoy where I currently am in life, I need change. And for me, the only way to get that change is to start over in a new school, with new friends and new experiences. But first I need to finish where I am before I move on to start anew.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
