A Fresh Start

A new semester, a new year.

A Fresh Start

Fall semester is days away from beginning now. For some, it's the first, for others it might be their sixth. Either way, it's upon you, and it's time to start panicking.

Just kidding, you can probably wait a few more weeks for that. Right now, the main concern should be making sure your classes are registered for. Nothing worse than getting to campus on the first day of the session and not actually having anywhere to go. Don't even get me started about entering a class a couple weeks in, good luck.

Once that's figured out, make sure you have a way to afford them, considering the "free world" is still being charged to learn. That's another article, though. If you're sure that your daily schedule including school, work, and everything in between is sound, you can move on to making sure that your dorm or your apartment looks nice, and feels even better to live in, because this is your new home.

Any new roommates not named "Mom" or "Dad" should be reached out to, that way you can start to feel out who you'll be living with, day and night, for at least the next few months. Trust me. My first year I met with 2 out of my 3 roommates for lunch, and the roommate who didn't grab lunch with us stole my detergent.

If you've got your schedule, and your living situation all figured out, the only thing left to do is stay focused (okay now you can start freaking out). You're an adult now, whether you and your parents are ready to accept it or not (persons reading this may or may not be 18 years of age or older at the time of reading this). No one is going to remind you that you have an exam coming up that you have to study for, or that it's time for dinner. As simple and basic as some of these things sound, you'd be surprised about how many people simply don't get it right. It's time to buckle down a bit and brace, or re-brace yourself for this part of the world.

If you're on board with all this, you're pretty much set. Of course, there's no way you'll know whether you're ready or not until you're in the middle of some trouble, but let's hope you're not. If you ever find yourself lost, just take a deep breath, and take care of business, because if you don't, nobody is gonna do it for you.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
