7 Tips For The New School Year
Psychology Today

With the new school year coming around, everyone's bummed and somewhat confused since school has been out for about three months. When we start a new year, it feels like starting school from the very beginning. Most of us didn't do much writing over the summer, so holding a pen or pencil is a struggle and everyone's handwriting is a mess. But, with these tips, you can start the new year off on the right foot!

1. Summer Work

DO YOUR SUMMER WORK!! Whether you do it last minute (not recommended) or not, just have it completed by the time you sit in your desk on the first day. Remember, summer work is your teacher's first impression of you, having quality work handed in gives off a good impression.

2. Don't sit in the back

Teachers automatically assume that those in the back are the people who slack off, though the stereotype is ridiculous, oftentimes it proves true. So, to avoid that label, try sitting in the front, or even in the middle! With this, the teacher will remember your name as opposed to the students in the back, and perhaps even show a bias towards you.

3. Take Notes!

Taking notes will not only help you adjust your handwriting more, but it will also show that you care about your grade. Try to avoid being the kid that asks everyone to send their notes to you.

4. Introduce yourself/Smile

Introducing yourself or even just a simple "good morning" to your teacher is seen as a friendly gesture. Most people dread going into class and it's seen on their face, this attitude rubs off on your teacher. So, to get on a good start, be friendly with your teacher and exchange a smile! Who knows, you may even end up liking the class you thought you would hate.

5. Stay organized!

If you're handed a calendar on the first day of school, you've hit the jackpot. Knowing your assignments before hand can benefit you and help you plan out your week! It's easier to stay on top of assignments if you keep track of them in either a planner or by simply crossing them off your calendar.

6. Join a club or two

Being involved in school really helps with time management. I know when I'm involved with things I usually try to get my work done as soon as possible so that I don't have to worry about it during a club meeting or a sport practice. Plus, getting involved will help you socialize more, it's a win-win situation. Just make sure to join things that interest you, and don't go overboard. Having too much on your plate can cause unnecessary stress.

7. Wake up early!

I really need to work on this myself, but waking up early (as in not ten minutes before you have to leave) helps you feel more awake during school. Also, waking up early can ensure that you eat before you get to school.

Good luck with your new school year!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
