Dallas Dance has done it again, by making more adjustments to Baltimore County Public Schools. I know what you are thinking- what cool teenager researches the new BCPS grading policy on her friday night? Well, the answer to that question is definitely this cool student right here. This 2016-2017 school year, a new grading and reporting procedures have been enforced, leaving students and teachers trying to decide its effectiveness towards learning the material and whether or not they like it.
The new grading policy claims that grades will solely be based off of tests and quizzes, leaving for homework and classworks to not be counted towards your actual quarter grade- or in this case it is called "not-graded" assignment. Also any graded quiz you take, and you do poorly on, you are allowed to "redo" it, but you have to go through whatever the teacher has decided to have you do to relearn the material; whether it be taking notes on that topic or doing quiz corrections. A flaw to this system, is that every teacher's redo is different and has the students trying to remember what is offered for each class. Confusing? Trust me, it will take awhile for everyone to be able to fully understand and adjust.
BCPS has had many researchers and professors working on this new grading policy to make certain that students are earning the grade and not getting useless points toward their grade, because they brought in a box of tissues. On one hand, this new policy is great for people that are significant test-takers, but for the people that aren't, it leaves them feeling stranded with low grades, that they might have a hard time raising it up. And students aren't the only ones having trouble with the grading policy. Teachers especially have it difficult, with constantly having to schedule all the students redo's and re-grade the assignment even if you have moved on in the class to recent and newer units.
In all honesty, the new grading policy, being a controversial topic among students and teachers, has a great amount of mixed opinions due the uncertainty of how effective it really is. It may feel strange now, but it will only take time to grow accustomed to the change (kind of like a phone update), and after all school has only been in a session a little over a month now.
Don't stress, you got this!
