Freshman, sophomore, junior or senior this advice will be helpful for every college student. School can become overwhelming at times so it is important to remember to stay organized.
1. Get a planner. Whether it’s from the dollar store, Wal-Mart or is the ever-so-popular Lily Pulitzer planner having a book to write everything down in can save your GPA and sanity. Teachers, especially during the first weeks of school, can overload students with information about the whole semester. My advice is to take time to write it all down that way all of your class assignments can be located easily in one place.
2. Utilize technology. In the world of smart phones and laptops it is beyond simple to keep all of your homework in order. Also, with the app store it is simple to download software to help you absorb information and make a good grade.
3. Don’t keep everything off until last minute. Even though, I’m guilty of this sometimes, it never fails that I regret waiting until the night before to write a paper or study for a test. I’ve learned that if I take a few days to complete my work I feel better and make a better grade.
4. Make friends in your classes. Having someone to call and ask questions about the assignments can be so helpful. Also, having a study buddy can be a great way to make an A.
5. Have a study space at home. Do not use your bed to complete your school work in. Lots of times sitting on your comfy plush bed can lead to falling asleep but if you have a desk to work on you can focus on the material in front of you and not be side tracked.
6. Form a relationship with the teacher. Getting to know your teachers can sometimes be intimidating but it is well worth it to make sure your teacher knows your name and face. A lot of the times teachers are more willing to help you out with school work and are more understanding if you ever have to miss class.
7. Don’t skip class for stupid reasons. I understand that every once in a while students have doctors appointments, other commitments, etc but don’t use up all of your absences for unintelligent reasons. Sleeping in late, being too hung over or just taking a personal day isn’t worth lowering your grade down.
8. Lastly, remember why you are in college. While its easy to get wrapped up in friends, partying, clubs, organizations and your independence remember that you are in college to get a degree.
