Cheers To A New New School And New Content

I'm back.

Transferring schools meant taking a break from Odyssey as well. After about four months and many requests to start writing again, I am happy to say that I am back. I didn't take a complete break though. Over the summer I wrote down a lot of ideas for articles that I'm really excited about. Being able to brainstorm without worrying about a deadline was nice and allowed me to come up with a lot of ideas that I hope my readers will enjoy.

Now let us catch up. For those of you that don't know, my name is Colleen and I transferred from Kent State University and I am currently enrolled as a sophomore at the University of Kentucky. It has been a great transition and I am in a much better place than what I was last year. I'm enjoying my coursework and of course, lots of Wildcat football.

I had a great summer with family and friends that went by way too fast. I went to Cedar Point with a friend, saw Shania Twain in concert, it was epic. Had a lot of days by the pool and enjoyed a 4th of July party with great people. I bought a lot of stuff for my apartment. Then I enjoyed a beautiful and relaxing vacation in Florida with my family and boyfriend. All while dressing women in their mid-50s working at Ann Taylor Factory and drinking way too much Starbucks for my own well-being.

As for what I am up to right now, well I just joined a group on campus called CHAARG. It's an all women's workout group on campus that is there to help you find your fit and live a better, healthier lifestyle. All of the girls are great and it keeps me working out and out of my apartment. It's been a fun experience so far. I've also been looking into studying abroad. It's overwhelming. There are so many options. Where to go, how long to go for, what to study while your there. It's always exciting getting involved and exploring campus life.

Everyone knows starting college is hard and a huge transition, but being a transfer student is like living in a totally different world. It's hard because you know how college works and what is expected of you, but at the same time, you have to learn a new campus all over again and figure out a new stage in life once again. It's a weird spot to be in. I love having the Odyssey to be able to write about whatever I am experiencing in life, on or off of campus. It's a great resource for me and many others to connect with people that are going through the same thing.

I am very excited to be back writing for the Odyssey again and to get back into the swing of things. Be on the lookout for an article every week from now on. As always, feel free to give me your feedback, opinions, advice, etc. Who doesn't love some constructive criticism? Here we go again!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
