Swifties everywhere can now rejoice because the day we have all been waiting for has finally come: "New Romantics" is officially the next single off of 1989! The announcement was made on Taylor Swift's twitter account just days after the 10 time Grammy winner brought home the Album of the Year award for the second time in her career.
To those who might be unfamiliar with the song, "New Romantics" is a bonus track from 1989's deluxe edition, which might sound like a peculiar choice for a radio single, but it's actually a huge fan favorite. In fact, most would probably say that it's the best song off of the entire album - something that Rolling Stone would likely agree with considering that they declared "New Romantics" as the second best song of 2014.
So why now? This is the sixth and (probably) final single off of this album. Why did it need to be "New Romantics" and not "Welcome To New York" or "I Know Places" or "How You Get The Girl"?
Perhaps it's because out of all of the album's tracks, "New Romantics" best summarizes exactly what 1989 has been all about: paying homage to 1980s pop while celebrating a newfound sense of self despite a broken heart and negative public opinion.
But not only that, it's just a damn good song--not to mention fun, which has certainly been a major theme of Swift's glittery world tour. And then of course genius lyrics like "we show off our different scarlet letters/trust me mine is better," "cuz baby I can build a castle/out of all the bricks they through at me" and "the rumors are terrible and cruel/but honey most of the them are true" are paired with a pop hook to die for, making this the perfect recipe for a final radio hit (and music video!).
If this single really does signify the farewell to 1989, what a way to go.
