Within the last couple of weeks, Childish Gambino has released two new songs and is set to release a new album entitled Awaken, My Love! this December. The timing is perfect with his show Atlanta ending its first season at the beginning of November with much success. The first single, “Me and Your Mama” takes a different turn. The intro features soft chimes along with female vocals. The music then changes abruptly and rock elements are introduced. Lyrics like “Let me into your heart” are featured along with an electric guitar and heavy bass. Gambino’s vocals range from rugged and aggressive to higher pitched, airy sounds. About four minutes in, the music slows down once again to a melodic tune. In the last minute and a half, the vocals are removed and listeners are left with pure instrumental to reflect on what Childish Gambino just offered to their ears.

This second single, “Redbone” is reminiscent of Bootsy Collins which should be appreciated. Gambino’s vocals are an even mix of both raspy and smooth which blends well with the funk infused production. The presentation of lyrics like “my peanut butter chocolate cake with Kool-Aid” is so pleasant. This is a song that I would have the instrumental version on a playlist, but I would also have the lyrics stuck in my head.

Both the singles feature Gambino focusing more on his singing which gives the impression that maybe Awaken, My Love! will be more of an R&B album. Either way, I would be fine because from listening to these first two tracks, this album is going to be mind-blowing.

College is filled with many things, and we're so often lectured to make the right decisions as we head out on our own into the college life. But sometimes it's necessary to indulge in some guilty pleasures as well as just doing things because you can. And honestly, a lot of the time it's inevitable. College is no piece of cake that's for sure, so it's okay to do some things you deep down know you shouldn't....once in a while anyways.
